Shore session Galway Bay

#1 Post by Caz-Galway »

Went out off the rocks between Barna and Spiddal last evening. Tide 3/4 full. Loads of Gulls on the water. Two of us had about 30 Pollack to 2lb and 5 smallish Mackerel in 2 hours. Baits were various sprat lures. Great to see fish back in the Bay. All returned except the 5 Mackerel and 4 Pollack.

The unusual bit of the story was to be seen in a pool of water at extreme high tide. About 30 of the biggest Scad (Horse Mackerel) I have ever seen. They were all about 1.5lb each and dead of course. Must have been stranded in a feeding frenzy the previous high tide.

There were loads of fish like that dead in the water, last year around the time of the mackeral frenzy aswell - mad how the gulls wont take them - there stinking for days until a storm washes them away...
