So are you saying that a dredge about 4 ft long and a 1.5ft opening that works the bottom of the sea bed for 5 to 10 minutes at a time catches and kills porpoises? Really?

All publicity is good publicity, what do you think Caz as a viable reason for it. Super trawler nets, low frequency sonar, starvation, plastic ??? what is most likely - there always seems to be a spike in the winter months when the super trawlers are off the west coast.

I have no idea what killed it. It could have been natural causes just as easily and certainly more likely than a shellfish dredge.

I would encourage any angler that finds a dead cetacean to report it to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group or to the UCC mammalian research group

If its fresh enough and within reach UCC will actually retrieve the body and conduct a post mortem. Then we can really have an idea as to why it died.

My grandad lived in that area since the 1930s and has always told me stories of finding porpoises and all sorts stranded as the tide goes out. I think there is still a porpoise in the the national history museum that him and his friends found in the 40s

There seems to be a good few porpoises around that area. Last Thursday and Monday just gone I was out off Howth and they were cruising up and down all the time I was there.
