Five- Mile Point 22/6/06

Duration:7pm-10:30pm

Tide:high at about 10pm

Weather: warm, had been windy but was calm from when I arrived

Bait: Rag, Crab, Razor

Rigs: 1 up 1 down, clipped down pennell

Results: one single tiny dab.

Report: when I arrived it looked perfect, the sea was pretty calm, small waves and seemingly just a bit of weed close in. I was wrong. There was masses of weed far out aswell which got really frustrating and the tide was bloody fierce, washing 6oz down the beach in seconds.

Left the fish baits at home to avoid the dogs and baited up (without really knowing how) with frozen peeler, plus rag(most of which was dead

) and razor casting about 80 yards. Then fished closser in on another rod which produced a solitary mini dab.
Wasn't great having to hall in tonnes of weed and walk well down the beach to retrieve line, though this only got very bad at the end. I have decided that I now HATE SEAWEED!

Pretty nice night for it all the same

They night raised 1 or 2 questions which I shall put to you tomorrow

Weed is a disaster....hate it

All that huffing and puffing and pulling and hauling...nothing like it for raising a sweat. What makes it worse is when there are people on the beach and they all come down to have a look at what the man is hauling in.....grrrrrrr!

I got the frozen crab from Celtic, presumed it was allready peeled as the shell was only semi hard at the edge, do you need to take off the skin or lungs or anything before wipping it on or is it just a case of removeing the legs and your ready to go?

Only used frozen peeer crab once before, this had no legs and a hard shell which easily came off and oozed orange juice. Yesterdays one was a full crab and seemed quite watery

Anyone caught any mackerel from the Wickow area yet?

How are ya col. That was probably a frozen softie you had yesterday. One that had already peeled and the new shell was starting to toughen up before it was frozen. There was mackerel around greystones last week before the winds picked up.

Tough times Col,
I havent fished that area in a while but i know the tide rips through there. I remember the rule for fishing anywhere after Greystones used be to fish last three of ebb and first three of flow. Sean and a few of the other guys should be more up to date on that than me. Again I think you suffered from going home too early.

I've had some fantastic baits from Celtic - especially their crab. Don't waste anything though. The crabs I had were about 2 inches accross and made a nice bait. You can take the legs & claws off and use them to suppliment another bait - take the shell off first though. With a good sized crab like that, you can take the shell off and cut the crab in half. If the crab is already soft, the shell is already off. put the crab on the hook and whip it on with bait elastic.

Thanks lads, of the 4 crabs used all were like this, which doesn't inspire great confidence in his baits but most reports of his stuff are positive.
Great to hear some mackerel were caught, though I suppose the unsettled weather will drive 'em back out.

Pat, I know your right in that night is better from all these beaches so am trying to organise some later sessions but at the mo need to be on road b4 dark with the bike.

Also, went to Newcastle the day after and there was far less weed plus a 3/4oz weight didn't actually end up miles down the beach like the 6oz gripper did in 5mile. It wasn't slack water so any idea why this was?
