Finally getting around to trying for Tope, few dates set out over the next month weather permitting. Out tomorrow on a shore
Just looking for your opinions lads, would you use Mono or Wire when fishing for tope?
Also would you use regular J hook like a C and R meat hook or would you use a circle hook?
Thanks lads
Sean

Re: Wire or Mono for Tope?
I would always use wire a short 10/12 inch biting trace 90/100 lb on a pulley or up and over rig also use 150lb mono for the uptrace.i never understand people using mono traces even with circle hooks.tope /blue sharks their teeth are virtulary the same.you never hear of people shark fishing with mono traces.i presume you are shore fishing so use a pair of 6/0 or 8/0 hooks like sakuma etc Pennell rig style.i also use a 200 grm lead.its weight helps to set the hooks when the tope runs.try using lamprey as bait as well.the only fish that usually takes lamprey are big bass or tope.you wont be bothered by doggies either..i also generally use j hooks found them easier to get out.hope this helps.

Wire all the way i use 80lb double crimped and shrink tubed over (neater) only really need a biting trace so 12-18inches is perfect i use 150lb rig body lasts longer an you wont be worrying if tope rolls on it

I use a pully rig greg with a single 6/0 cox an rawl meat hook works great for me have also used pennel though too with a circle hook for the pennel just to hold the bait in place stop it sliding up the line sometimes

yes guts you could use 100lb mono if it is all you have.try and get 150lb if you can no point losing a fish for the sake of a mono leader.guts mate if you don't have any 150lb mono send me a pm with your name and address I will post some out to you ok.

I'm sorry for posting this here but I'm just getting in to sea fishing. I'm just wondering is there any area around mayo or galway to catch tope from the shore thanks
