Shore caught Tope in Kerry?

#1 Post by stonefish »

Has anyone caught any Tope from the shore around Kerry? Just moved down from Dublin recently and a shore caught Tope is on the list of fishing dreams. I've heard that Fenit might produce some but haven't met anyone yet who has caught one. Would Tope be around at this time of year?

Out at the point at Derrymore. A long walk to get out there.

Thanks Donal fished out by Derrymore a couple of weeks ago. Looking for Ray but ended up with a couple of Bass in flat calm sea. I'll give the point a go next time out, let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the reply.

Yes , but you take your chances.
I was at the point two years ago. I drove the middle of the beach at about 30mph, the bit of speed helps, as I neared the point I went up on the stones at the high water mark. Drove back over the same track. Fished about two hours around low water and added a stinger and undulated to my list.

Head north out of Castlegregory towards the Magharees. You'll come to a small stream, just before the bridge gives access to the mark. If you pass a caravan park you have probably gone just too far. You are fishing into Tralee Bay, it's supposed to be good for thornies, flood and early ebb.

The late Bob Moss suggested Derrymore "should be capable of producing tope" and stated that tope are often caught from boats well within 100yds of the mark.

There has been stingers and undulated ray caught in the bay in the last two weeks

the tope show a bit later and are best on the bigger tides

Mates of mine from the UK were over in Derrymore in May last year fishing for Rays on the beach (50lb Stinger the biggest) they had a Tope over 30lb and missed a few purely because they weren't fishing for them. They're going back at the end of the month. I'm going over next week 9th May for ten days. :D
