Hey i'm gonna head to poolbeg lighthouse sunday morn i think and try to target some smooth hounds, has any one got any advice for me i've never fished for them before and i'm tryin to build up my species list, I've got seven different species this year and i'm tryin to build up my portfolio if you will
Cheers,
Al
I'm planning to try the same thing myself, and like you have never targeted them. Hope to give 5mile a bash tonight or tomorrow, armed with frozen peeler and rag
I think thats where i got the idea to target them, from your pm
What sort of traces you gonna use, pennel rig? Not sure what line to use for my main trace. Let me know how ya get on n what sort of rigs etc.
sorry about all the questions but did ya buy the crab or collect it cause i dont think i'll have time to collect it like last week,
Good luck,
Al
Not sure what rigs to use but I'l probably experiment around a bit with single paternoster, pulleys etc and I've just realised I don't have any 1/0 or 2/0 hooks only size 1
Regards the crab I had to go all the way into town to buy some, none to be bought in Wicklow and can't really collect my own.
Will report how it goes but doubt anything will happen. Any one know whats good weather for hound fishing, will the recent wind and rain minimise the chance of one?
I'm gonna get some new gear tomoro morn, can anyone tell me what line strenght to buy i was thinking 30lb but am i better of using wire traces?
Sorry getting excited about it now:) might chance my arm at bass as well sure why not it never hurts to try
Cheers,
Al
30 lb is fine, probably more than enough.
Wire to total overkill... smoothies are not tope!
Good luck to you, one species we do not get in the west - sadly.

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...
2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks
Al wrote:Cheers for that kieran, I'll prob just use 25lb line in that case then was just making sure didn't know really what to expect,
Cheers again,
Al
Smooth hound have flat molars ( for crushing crabs etc) rather than sharp teeth..

How are ya Al. Recent weather is'nt the best for smoothound unfortunately. They like it pretty calm and settled in my experience although the winds been westerly so you never know. I use 30lb snood line and go with one or two hook clipped down rigs.
Al, if youve only got size 1's dont be too worried, you'll land smoothound on them no bother, so long as your drag is set adequately, just match your bait to the size of the hook, ie dont use baits too big that will mask the point.
Hey seanibo cheers for that i think the weather is supposed to be a bit more settled on Sunday(Well i hope it is anyway:)) but i'm not gonna start believin the weather man now. Dont worry i've got plenty of 1/0 & 2/0 hooks so i should be fine, i think col has the 1s but i'm sure he'll be pretty pleased to hear that too i think he was a bit worried I'm gonna fish a flattie rig while i'm there too just in case see what happens.
cheers for the advice,
hopefully it'll be productive
I agree with Sean, they like it mild. If using small hooks try using a pennel setup as it maximises your chances of a hook up. king rag can also work well.
Cheers for that Pat, I'm thinking that if the wind stays like this over the weekend i might put it off until the weather gets a bit calmer, hopefully the weekend after.but i'll still go out prob just up to greystones or something i suppose i'll see what happens on the day. Cheers for all your replies lads, you've been a great help, very much appreciated
