Summer Tope (Mayo/Sligo) advice?

#1 Post by seank »

Ive tried fishing for tope on a couple of occasions over the past few summers by landing and staying over night on various islands in clew bay. Here i fished into to channels between the island where tope have been taken by boat anglers so assumed theyd be a possibility from the shore.
Bullhuss, straps and thornbacks were all that showed.

This year I will venture a little further a field to north mayo or sligo. I have an idea of a few marks up that direction. But ive no clue, of tides, weather, or earliest time they can be targeted in these areas.

Any help at all would be much appreciated, as i'm trying plan ahead. Im itching to catch one

Cheers lads

Are you planning on fishing for them from the shore?

Tullyhanbaun, near the old ferry house, doohooma - channel looks just like the ones in inner galway bay that hold them
Not much use fishing the channels round the islands in clew bay unless you can reach the same holes the lads are fishing with the boats - check out the navionic charts for depths

Tullylaghan, near Doohoma?

Corbyeire, is that the small isolated cottage at the slipway, where they hold the regatta?

Always thought it looked fishy but never tried it...

Looks fishy alright thanks corbyeire. Blacksod bay has certainly a good run if tope. Id be certain that channel and inlet would be a haven for sea trout also.

When would be the earliest tope come inshore?

I used navionics and have seen the images on depth sounders when out in boat comps. Inishleague/inishdaw and inishleague/dornish channels drop to 30ft 20yards out at low tide. Ive had big huss back in 2013 at night on dornish. And hooked and lost a tope at anchor on our punt the next day.

you need a good stretch of high pressure, usually lads start searching down here end of may, maybe before if the weather is very good
