howdie, I have a fair few questions I'm hopping some can halp with... raedy?

Is frozen lug wrap any good at this time of year....for what?
In general how long will baits(sandeel, lug, crab etc) keep in the freezer, months, years or does it vary?
If I plan a short session and have a pack of 12 sandeel but know 7 will be enough, if I take out 7 do the rest suffer because the pack was opened?
Are there any frzen baits, besides peeler thats good for smoothhound?
Have not had success with bait box frozen crab, what about anyone else?

Finally...... does anybody know if ABC in Dublin still do frozen peeler?

Don't know... used it alot down in Cork for codling this winter as did alot of other anglers and it proved very very successful. I still imagine fresh worm would be better in alot of cases but any species that you would target with worm baits should still take frozen blacks

In general I don't keep frozen bait for more than a year. I do a big mackerel run once or twice during the summer and this keeps me going for the year and the mackerel seems to hold up well. Everything else is used up before then, a few packets of sandeel bought and used within a couple of weeks/months here and there. They do recommend that if you do collect your own razor, apparently it fishes better if it has been frozen down for more than a year...

Wouldn't bother me, and I've done it. Might get a bit of freezer burn maybe? Have caught plenty of fish on odd freezer burned baits too.

All I can say about peeler is that if you plan to use frozen then freeze them down from fresh yourself. Alot of the frozen crab I used to buy from various sources was not ready to be peeled. Yes they were peelers but frozen before they were about to pop properly. After defrosting the crab you might find it difficult to remove the underneath shell segments and you end up ripping the crab apart leaving you with nothing more than a ball of mush. I buy a couple of dozen fresh here and there during the summer and then freeze them down myself. It's the only way to make sure you get crab in top quality condition.

Think I'll give the lug wrap a go (6.50euro) and you've put my mind at ease regarding the frozen sandeel.

Again sorry about butting so much in one post

but just had all these Q's on me mind

On the sand eel front freezer burn means the they'll fly off the hook much easier. Saying that for fishing close in at piers I''ve found burnt sand eeel them deadly for doggies. I know some people try and to use sand eel knocking around in the freezer a while as they reckon its better for ray.

To avoid freezer burn just repack sand eel into a a freezer bag. Not as good as vacum packing but fine to use for your next outing. Fill a couple of packs into a thermos flask and as long as its not to hot and the lid is closed between taking a couple out at a time whats left over will be forzen and can be thrown back in the freezer.

Hey Col was just in ABC a few minutes ago(Dangerous to work across from a tackle shop, have only been working here a week and have already spent nearly 300euro

) looking for frozen peeler but they haven't got any in, he said to ring back tomorrow as they might have some then. I hope they do i dont fancy cycling to Dollymount early tomoro as i'm very lazy

Col, when using mackeral and sandeel for a session and you end up having some left i put in in a clear curry tray(cleaned out of course) and cover it with salt. This will then last for months. The salt actually toughins up the mackies & sandeels making them much easier to stay on your hook the next time out...Its not great info but it works none the less

many times I've seen my usual charter in Brazil buy fresh bonito, which aren't too different from mackeral, and immediately fillet and salt them. Can get a bit pongy in the tropical sun, but it makes a very solid bait. He'll use freshly salted in preference to fresh, actually. I hate mushy frozen mackeral - I always freeze enough for the winter, but often I think it's hardly worth it.

Never thought about doing it here. I'm going to try it!

If they have some frozen peeler in town tomorrow I'l head in, the only problem is it will b about 2hrs b4 I get home to return them to a freezer and they may have thawed a bit, will this harm them much as bait? Alternativaly any one know anywhere in S.Dublin/N.Wicklow they are available?Whats/wheres the place Iv'e haerd of.... Celtic Baits? Or where is southside angling, I know its in clanbrassil street but where is that?

, I got a large mouth thermos flask to hopefully hold peeler but if I but anything inside it just thaws out, its plastic on the inside not steel, does it need to be charged up in the freezer or something?

Get a cool bag or box and bung in a few ice packs - should keep stuff frozen solid all day.

You shouldn't have to put a flask in the freezer to 'charge it up' but if you stick in some water you have chilled in the fridge first, with maybe a few ice cubes, it'll cool the inside of the flask. Any bait put in it after you've removed the ice water should stay frozen longer.

Hi Col,
Celtic Baits is a bait suppliers located on the Ringsend road in Irishtown, Dublin 4. You can always pick up fresh rag (live peeler, on occasions) and any amount of frozen bait!

Is it an actual shop, sorry about my lack of knowledge! Would plan to head in tomorrow morning.

From Pearse Station, Celtic Baits is about a 10 minute walk. When you get into Irishtown the shop is directly across from Irishtown Pharmacey. If there is nobody in the shop just ring the number on the window as they should be next door.

No prob Col,
As far as i'm aware they have frozen peeler in stock but they also usually have some live peelers aswell. It might be a good idea to give them a ring in advance so as not to waste your time. Hope this info is at least some help to you!

Cheers again.
Called into Celtic Baits today, had to wait outside for about 20mins in unpleasant weather but it turned out to be worth it.

Asked for 2 boxes of frozen crab which were a fiver each, he offered me some live ones for free but I said no because I knew I wouldn't be allowed keep 'em in the fridge plus not realy sure how/when to use them properly

Anyway he then gives me, a box of live rag, a pack of sandeel and razor for FREE!!

Didn't count the second but one box of the peeler had 7. So I got all this for 10euro when henrys wanted 6.75euro for 5 frozen peeler. RESULT!! Shall be visiting again, pitty its 2hrs away
