3 hook flapper question

#1 Post by seank »

Started making my own beach/match rigs during the week after years of buying them ready made. Been using very short rigs for year, and noticed from a year of match fishing that people use very long rigs on surf Beach's to search out fish.

So made a few 6-7foot rigs with long snoods 20in plus. Some with fluorocarbon and some with amnesia as the snood line. Tested them out last night and picked up a few fish.(weever, turbot, flounder sea trout)

I've few question y'all might be able to help me with...

When should I use shorter snoods?

How effective are pop ups at attracting fish?

When is it best to fish all the snoods above the lead?

Cheers
Target for 2017: Tope, Bass, Specimen shore pollack, Specimen Sea trout, Turbot over 30cm, common skate

The calmer it is the longer the snood you can get away with. In more surf/swell the long snoods will tangle so you'll need to go shorter

I have never used pop ups actually. I imagine that they may give a more natural presentation. I have heard of them being used if crabs are decimating your baits on the bottom

Question 3 - maybe if you are targeting species that are not hard on the bottom like coalfish or whiting.id be interested to hear other opinions on that

Thanks shortcircuit

How about beads sequins etc. Do you find them effective fish attractors?

pop ups can be really good for lots of species. i would usually put 1 on a rig unless i can think of a good reason not too. fish all hooks above the lead when you do not want the bottom snood tangling with the lead weight or if retrieving over mixed ground. sometimes 3 hooks above the lead catches more fish.
