Garryvoe- Best Baits

#1 Post by shortcircuit »

Hi folks, what are the go-to baits for Garryvoe this time of year?

I hope to go tomorrow evening for the incoming tide. I will bring some razor as I reckon it would be foolish not to use it after Barney. Could anyone advise other baits?
Cheers,

Crab and Lug for the cod. Mackerel for the whiting, coalies, dogs, ray, strap conger, and anything else that moves down that way.

It's one on the nice things about the Garryvoe beaches, anything can turn up. I had a 13lb painted ray there last years on a size 4 hook baited with crab while scratching for the small stuff

You werent lying about the mackerel for the dogs Donal. Had a couple last night

Had a couple of big rattling bites on crab, but each time I reeled in- no fish and bait mangled.

If the traces came back mangled it was probably strap conger

I fished down that the other night same story rattling bites no hook ups and mangled baits.
I changed to size 4 hooks and had whiting after whiting followed by small doggie after doggie. The whiting were a decent size.
I was using crab, black lug, razor, squid and mackerel with the razor and mackerel giving me the most hook ups on the bottom snood only of a 1 up 1 down flapper.
Was hoping for at least a coalfish but not to be.
