Thornback video, Donegal Bay

#1 Post by johnwest »

Here is some video taken underwater on one of my recent days out showing thornies, sometimes taking more interest in leads than baits!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=p ... TPgKiS1VC8
I'm still working on how best to set up the camera so have patience.

Wow. That is class. Fantastic footage really enjoyed viewing that. Always found the moving bait on the drift great for rays. Amazing how long they were following it before taking and often when other rays moved in beside them they swallowed it down before others got it, also a few made a go at the lead and boom. Brilliant to watch

Very good JW, really clear picture.
i guess that the movement of the lead/trace along the bottom is purely a result of the drift of the boat..
interesting to see them diving for the bottom and trying to bury themselves once hooked.
stunning looking fish under the water too
keep em coming. looking forward to many more of these vids. :)

Thanks rushnaldo, other footage shows them following for up to 12 mins before taking, or swimming off! The lead and boom is a big attraction, sometimes greater than the bait. I wonder is it visual or does the lead/steel swivel/saltwater have some electro-galvanic effect; sharks and rays can sense minute electric currents from prey buried under the sand.

Sometimes it holds dabs and occasional turbot as well as dogfish though none on this occasion.

Yep, I think the lead kicking up sand and possibly the noise of the bumping lead are powerful attractions.

Thanks everyone else for your comments.

Awesome vid. watched a few more last night and what they all had in common was the amount of times the lead got hit by the fish instead of the bait.
