Youghal cod

#1 Post by bogwoppit »

A bit early I know but I'm planning on giving this a go when they come in.

I'm still learning the ropes on the sea angling but I've had a decent summer on the smoothound.

I'm planning on making a few trips to Youghal over the winter but I'm just looking for a few pointers.

What leads do you need for the estuary? I'm assuming 6 and 7 ounce grippers are the order of the day, I usually fish with pulley rigs too which I assume the cod won't mind.

I know it can get fairly busy down there in the obvious spots so I was planning on searching out a couple of spots further up the river as a backup.
How far up do they get caught (weather dependent I know).

Crab will be my primary bait but is there a need to carry something else too?

Thanks

Al

Crab lug and mussel were top baits for me last year also had them on razor

6 and 7oz leads is all i use around them areas as some of the spots have a strong current

Pully rigs and pully droppers i use 40lb snoods for the cod
