An oddball, question, but I'm wondering if anyone could identify the pier in this painting. My grandfather fished here as a boy, so goes the story at least, and I want to revisit the location. It should be somewhere in Co. Donegal. The painting is probably from the mid-1960s, so, things will have changed since.
Thanks,
John

Don't recognise it - might be somewhere in South, or SW Donegal or in Inishowen.

You might be onto something there Dan. It's got the dogleg right.Determined Dan wrote:jkalucki wrote:An oddball, question, but I'm wondering if anyone could identify the pier in this painting. Dungloe gets my vote
Artistic licence - reckon the painter increased the height of the hill to seaward to give the picture better balance...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

Yes, that's absolutely it! You can even see where the dirt fill has been hardened since the painting. Thank you!
I've been slowly going along in Google earth, and the mountains in Rathmullen look more like the painting (https://www.flickr.com/photos/donegalco ... 263129177/), but the pier is certainly Dungloe.

What do I win what do I win. . . You welcome. When I was there mid summer it was full of mullet so it might be worth targeting them if your going that way,

I would go with Dungloe pier too. That mark to the left is possibly the old swimming pool you pass on the road out to maghery visible at low tide. And that hill in the background would tie in with Crohy Head and the tower. Artist wasnt the best at his proportions cracking painting though.
