I recently bought 300yds of 30lb power pro and have a question about putting this on the reel. I only want to put about 100-150 yards of it on and load the reel with pleanty on mono backing.

How do I know when there is the right amount of backing on the reel to start putting on the braid so that I'm not left with a lot of empty space around the spool lip? the reel is curently fully loaded, will I just guess and try take off 80-100yds of it?

I'm sure someone will come up with a far better suggestion, but how about putting on your 150yds of braid, putting your backing on until the spool is full, wind the whole lot back onto another spool. Wind the lot onto a third spool (!) and now wind it onto your reel.

sounds good in theory, but in practice not quite how it works out..

i have a boat reel that had braid on it (100m) and wanted to back it up with dacron... filled the spool witk dacron over ther braid until full barrel.. transfered to another reel and then back onto the boat real... some how it only ended up being 3/4 full, reason line diameters are different, same should apply with braid and mono..it's just a hit and miss thing

Be'ng using braid (shore and boat) for yonks. I fill the reel with the full 300mts. As it start to show wear I transfer it onto another reel this puts the unused line on top on the new reel thus prolonging the life of the braid.

Viper, I think 20lb is equivalent to 6lb mono,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,30lb = same dia as 8lb mono anyway,

Put some masking tape on your spool and guess a good level. Now wind on you briad. If you have too much space add more masking tape and go again. When you get the level right, mark it with a marker. Now remove the tape and fill with mono to the level and add your braid.

the sure way to get 150yards of braid on a spool is to buy a line counter from shakespeare you need two empty spools for your reel load 492 feet of braid then attach mono fill the spool up to 1mm then just transfer the mono and attached braid to the other spool and it works out perfect every time. plus you have exactly 150meters left on your spool.492 ft is 150meters.and remember allways superglue the knots in braid to mono.because braid being much thinner will cut through mono.weymouth angling in uk sells line counters.

But how do you know there is 300 yards of braid on the spool to begin with. If you are looking at having two loads of braid of equal measurements, put a stick at one end of a long field. Take some line off the new spool of braid and put one end round the stick. Now holding the loose end of braid and the spool in the other hand, walk back 150 yards and you should have two equal lengths of braid. Now you can wind one end onto your fishing spool and the other you can wind back onto the line spool. Happy days!
