Right guys So after fishing many years beach fishing and rough ground fishing with a fixed spool i am looking for a new challenge.


I am looking to update my gear and I am considering to buy a multiplier and a rod to go with it....


So I have read lots of mixed reviews on different rods/reels so id rather ask people who use the equipment day in and day out....


So what rod and reel would you suggest ?


I fish alot of rough ground areas and use 18lb to 20lb ......


any other thoughts or opinions let me here them.

All I can offer is what I use for rough ground fishing...

Technically the Daiwa TDU is a boat rod but it has enough flex in its 9.5 foot length to give a decent cast off the rocks. An uptider has the strength of a boat rod for coping with congers yet the length to get you out over ledges etc. when you are trying to bring a fish in or try to lead it away from snags. If I were being very critical I would prefer something with a stiffer tip but that's just a personal choice. I have it paired with an old and rather battered SLOSH loaded with 19lb mono, although some people prefer braid. I tried braid and it's reduced to hairy twine in minutes on most of my rock marks so mono it has to be... has coped with anything thrown at it so far including a 20 lb+ conger and a 14 lb thornie.

Wouldnt be recommending a boat rod for shore work

Plenty of rough ground rods on the market to choose from but the best reel out there is a Penn 525. Try to get your hands on the older model it has the black star drag and black rin

well obviously no, neither would I, but I thought he was looking for a rough ground rod for fishing off rocks only and not off a beach.

Penn 525 is super, have one that I use with an old Penn Vendetta 13 footer rod. Rod is ok, nothing special.
Good general use pairing.

That's the older type of Penn better quality

Thats not exactly cheap. Its upto €50 already with 2 days left and hes looking for €18 postage to Ireland. That could work out at nearly €100 by time bidding finishes which is a bit much when buying blind when you cant open it up for a look.

The 535 would be more of a boat reel it would not have the same casting distance as the 525.

Put it this way, I have 3 525 for shore angling and 3 535 for boat fishing.
I would never use the 535 on the shore but I do have an well used 525 that I'd use for gilling on the boat
