In Wicklow 6/6/06

People: me

Duration: 8pm - 10pm

Tide: no idea, anyone help? high at 8:23pm (Greystones Irish times)

Weather: brilliant and calm

Bait: sandeel

Rigs: 1 up 1 down, 1 flapper

Results: 4 doggies and a dab


Report: Excellent day to be on the beach 8) Sea was completely flat, a group of porpoises made a show along with a seal. No terns diving though. Did a small bit of spinning but got nothing.

Now a question, I got a small rattle on the rod and thinking it was an investigating dab reeled in a turn or two to try and intice it. Left it for a few minutes and when returned there was no sign of any fish. Reeled in to see the trace severed half way up and no fish.
What could have cut the line like this? Tope? :D :shock: Probably not but anyone any idea. Didn't get a yanking bite or run, the rattling just stopped.

Anyway its days like today I'm luky I like fishing,

spider crabs

Hi

Not sure if you get them in Wicklow but a spider crab (bas***ds) does that - neatly snips through the snood and waddles off with the loot... very common in Little Killary and in some of the deeper water venues here.

Amen to that - had a similar experience at Carrigaholt pier recently; lost a trace and 1/2 hour later hauled up a spider crab with my trace wrapped round his claws

I wasn't going to say because it was during the ban and all but I also managed to land my first ever bass here :shock: It was a total surprise!!

Got a little rattle on the rod and tought dab but then the tip went crazy. Next tought was a dog as sometimes their bites are impresive. Picked up the rod and started to wind, but this wasn't just weight it was fighting hard. Soon their was the view of silver flashes darting around high up in the water and I tought sea trout. Only when it was being lifted out of the water did I realise what it was.

I was really pleased with myself, just a pitty it had to be during the ban. :?
And of course it was returned, I was wearing shorts so as with all fish that day it was unhooked in the water, had scales in pocket so quickly weighed it, and then slipped her back in :D 8)

Good man col, you deserve it. Fair play on the catch and release too. What size was it?

Scales was bouncing between 2lb and 1.9lb : :D Notvery big but I don't mind, tought it looked bigger and it managed to jab me with its spines.

Nice one col but you've a problem now. Catching bass is addictive. You'll have to come down south for a regular fix now after the 15th. :D

BTW, I see no reason to hide the fact that you accidentally caught a bass. You were not using specific bass tactics so it's unavoidable. It's better to say that you picked one up but returned it, setting an example for those less responsible.

definatly the trade mark of a spider crab.... always losing hooks to them f**kers :( :( :(

Ah so thats what it is :)
Happened to me in Wicklow a while ago too, i was very confused..well i actually thought it was a big fish that had bitten through, but that makes much more sense! I never catch big fish :( :D
