Hi Lads,
does anybody know where you could catch black sole from the shore.
Would love to add one to species list.

Thanks

better luck from the south coast beaches,,Waterford,,,wexford, cork etc,,,sole have been caught on many beaches around Ireland but are not a targeted specie either from boat or shore over here,,,,they tend to be caught in a lot of the estuarys in the uk and a hot spot being the Thames believe it or not....as for Ireland if I was targeting them defo would be at night,,,small hooks with fluorocarbon traces,,,baited with rag or lug,,,you must get tides right aswell,,sole tend to move and feed hard especially around the big tides,,,and also read a report form a very experienced sole angler in the uk regarding the hour before midnight and one hour after was a vital vital catch time for him and having the tides running in conjuction with this(high/low etc)....I also clearly remember him stating that at night the sole tend to come into within 50 years of the beach shore line,,,,,maybe just beyond the last surf line or first for others,,,their mouths are at the side so interacting with bites,,you need to be patient,,,but patience is ruled out then when you reel one a shore,,,i have never caught one or really even targeted them but I have eaten one and I can tell you that they are delicious,,,,,i did have intentions to target them but never got around to doing it,,,best of luck with your search for a sole

Going fishing for them tonight , you are welcome to join me ............... Sizewell , Suffolk , England !!. Seriously though I have not caught any in Ireland on rod and line but have caught plenty of small ones in a net at Ventry Kerry which we trawl along the beach. Over here we use a standard three hook flapper rig with small size 4 or 6 Aberdeen hooks , baits must be hard on the bottom so fish with a slightly slack line , keeping the rod low ( if weed etc allow ). Most soles are caught VERY close in 20 yards or less. When you get a bite , allow it plenty of time for it to develop as they have very small mouths and tend to nibble away sometimes. Best bait , don't think there is one , albeit it only use worms maddies fish well as do ragworm and sometimes lugworm. Recently over here really old smelly ragworm has been doing the trick. Darkness is always better , state of tide not so important in my opinion , if I had to choose mid flood to over high water in darkness would be best. Best of luck.
