Tope Rigs

Im heading out on a tope session on Saturday and picked up some wire traces rather than putting my own together. the wire is 27 kilo on the traces do you think this is heavy enough

samo if its one of the wire pike traces theres a good chance you will lose your tope.use 150 lb line and wathever hook you prefair

It's unlikely a Tope will bite through 60lbs wire, but I find the light stuff like that kinks badly after a fish or 2. Try and get yourself a spool of 100lbs+ wire as this is stiffer, and a packet of hooks and make up 3 or 4 rigs before you get on the boat. It'll only take a few minutes to knock a few traces together, but it will be worth the effort.

I make up a load of Tope traces before each season starts, and I'm only over in Sallynoggin. I'll give you a couple of mine if you want. I'm not a fan of shop bought traces at all.

Try 200lb mono, doesn`t kink like wire and 8/0 Sakuma Mantas, dead easy to make.

100-150 rig body with 100lb wire,i use cox and rawl meat hooks 6/0s are perfect

I'm with you Ste c, I use 150lbs Jinkai big game leader mono crimped to American styles cross link swivel, and about 18in of 100lbs wire, my hook of choice is 7/0 Varivas Big Mouth Extra. Cox & Rawle uptides are great, just a bit expensive.

200lbs mono? Just how big are the tope you guys are chasing? :shock:

I don't think its to do with how big they are but how sharp there teeth are. now iv never caught a tope but that's my take on it.
