Was out lure fishing for bass last evening on a quiet secluded bay. Flat calm.
All of a sudden about 10 meters away I hear a huge splash and see something hitting the water. Couple of minutes later 15 yards in the other direction I see a small silver fish leap clean out of the water acrobatically. This must have been a sea trout?
It didn't look the right shape for a bass or mullet and I didn't think either of those species lept like a gymnast! In any case, it had not interest in my feed shallow or the kilty-type lure i threw at it! Are sea trout prone to taking a lure, and if so what ones work best?

Re: Sea Trout??
Most likely they were ST. There a whole raft of lures you can use, have a search of the lure section and you'll get all the info you need. Daiwa prisoner jigs have been very good for me this year mind!

Re: Sea Trout??
Would bottom fishing a juicey lug worm entice the odd sea trout or would lure fishing something like a deadly dick lure or a taz devil be better, ive noticed a few sea trout jumping around the margins myself.

Re: Sea Trout??
make sure if you are targeting them you have a licence, getting caught with them can lead to confiscation of all gear and/or prosecution. usually in estuaries they will take bass lures but i find that kilty lures have worked the best for me

Re: Sea Trout??
I don't have a licence for sea trout, I wouldn't target them, I was curious to see if they would take a bait fished on the bottom, I caught sea trout many years ago as a teenager on a bubble float with a dry fly 6 foot past it, I will be getting a licence next year, I've to many other targets for 2014.

Re: Sea Trout??
Sea Trout will take anything. They are a real pain in the bojangles if you ask me. Many a time I've had loads of small ones hitting Crab or Lug when I've been targeting big Flounder or Bass, particularly in Kerry. The small ones swallow down baits just like small Whiting do. I've often considered buying a licence as I imagine bigger ones are great sport when taken on the right tackle but in certain estuaries when trying for specimen Flounder the undersized ones can drive you mad.

Re: Sea Trout??
Best bait for me would be a free lined whole sandeel. Better hook up and less chance of them breaking your heart right at your feet when they throw the lure.
