There are loads of choices out there now.
Drift, Contour, Garmin, Jvc, Sony Etc....Etc. There are also clones for sale on 7-day shop and other gadget sites but I'm not sure of the performance or angle of lens etc.
Don't limit yourself to GoPro without checking out the competition. There are pros and cons for each different type.

I'm using a JVC GC-XA1 and am delighted with it. It is waterproof without a housing so does not suffer the same amount of fogging (Fogging can be an issue for some cameras if using for underwater shots).

I went through the same elimination process last year and decided the GoPro was way overpriced. I eventually bought a Panasonic Lumix FT5 (on Amazon) for about €220 - its ruggedised, waterproof to about 60ft, dustproof etc, and takes amazing quality video. Just the job for mounting on the boat.... then when I was flying out on holiday, I spotted the new Sony action cam in Dixon's at the airport. Tiny, gorgeous, and the same price...

Indeed some of the "tough" compacts are great. I got a great deal on a Nikon Aw100. The average compact does not have a wide angle lens though ( that is compared to an action camera).
I got great results from a Drift HD until it was stolen last year.
Action Cameras (.co.uk) have a varied range, good for comparison. Although I notice that they do not list Gopros any more. The Drift 720 is a great start for the money. The drift comes with a remote control but it is splash proof only without a housing.
I would reckon that accessories for Gopros are getting cheaper by the day though. It is all about deciding what you want to do and what features you want. Budget for spare batteries and a couple of SD cards (or micros depending on the unit).

I opted for the GoPro 2 over the Black, pretty much all the specs you need, way cheaper, esp if you check on amazon, got mine from the UK, over 100euro cheaper than anywhere in ireland was selling it.
i get all my accessories from dx.com , china. they are generic versions made for it, anti fog inserts, headmounts, chestmount, tripod adapter, for a fraction of the cost of Official GoPro accessories
