Mackerel sizes & waste
My first summer and autumn in Kilkeel, and seen some brisk fishing off the pier. I would say fish sizes are well down on my last experiences off galway bay a couple of years ago.
I observed one thing that bugs me though. PURE WASTE!!
One kid maybe 12 or 13 talks of catching 80 mackerel and no one in his household eats them, so he leaves them out on the front garden, crazy situation. I took home over 30 fish one evening and 10 were eaten that evening (nothing nicer), but I was guilty too that I had not enough space for storage.I ended up putting fishes back in to feed the resident seals so wasn't feeling too gulity
Should port authorities not police the quantity taken by an individual? Should the size caught be a factor too? I would love to hear opinions on this subject.

Common sense, knowing the difference from wrong and right and education on respect for nature.
My youngest sister (9) asked me to bring her fishing with me a few weeks back so we headed for St.Helens Wexford , First cast we caught a bass 40cm and she asked me what the size was for putting the back or keeping them, I said 40cm and asked her what she wanted to do with it , she said put him back and we'll catch him again next year... her exact words .

Regarding mackeral I'd take what I can store in my freezer for bait, few for the pan and then target other species. No point in killing 100 if you're going to use 10
It ain't easy but it sure is simple!

shake it off the hook if you can, to return it - dont handle it - the heat from your hand burns their skin and makes them unlikely to survive much longer after that

Re: Mackerel sizes & waste
i've observed a group of 4-6 FN's fishing for Mackerel off Skerries pier every day since June, sometimes catching up to 80 fish each or more per session, and every fish straight into the bag; day in day out up to the present.
Now if that's not sickening greed, what in the name of jeazzus is?

Ya I agree people are entitle to keep as many mackerel as they want, regardless of who they are, rod and line will not do any damage, it's commercial trawlers doing damage... Common sense..

Re: Mackerel sizes & waste
That wouldnt be a fraction to what commercial fishermen catch in a day. If i had the time and lived near the coast , i would be doing the same thing. The mackerel is very valuable to me in the winter as bait and they wont be caught again until the following summer!!!

Re: Mackerel sizes & waste
A fraction! some trawlers can Hoover up ten tonne of mackerel in a Mather of mins...
The biggest problem at the moment with the marine Eco system is that millions apon millions of small fish are being caught such as mackerel, sandeel and sprat to use in fish food for salmon farms all around the world...
That's why salmon these days in Ireland look like they North African marathon runners... Except for the few big salmon which are caught..

You can quote all the common sense stats ya like, if it was a mark that you fished every Summer for the last 30 years and you couldn't any more because of the dangerous carry on by BASHERS half loaded on cheap vodka; I would imagine you'd have a different point of view.

Re: Mackerel sizes & waste
Have to agree with monkeywrasse on this one these lads have taking over the pier for the last few years now and the locals that have been fishing it there whole lives don't get a sniff of fish while these lads are there, and now lads is there really any need to go out after more when you have bagged 80+ the day before? No this isn't having an affect on the fish stocks but is just pure greed IMOMONKEYwrasse wrote:i've observed a group of 4-6 FN's fishing for Mackerel off Skerries pier every day since June, sometimes catching up to 80 fish each or more per session, and every fish straight into the bag; day in day out up to the present.

Re: Mackerel sizes & waste
Our in Tramore Waterford today.
7 mackerel just left on the rocks
Could see they were stiff and just left from last nights fishing by someone.
Hope the people get snagged on every rock / weed anytime they go out in future.
Complete waste.

Come ere lad nobody owns the pier even if you built it and looked after your whole life, it's state property ...
That's the same mentality as people netting salmon or any type of poaching because there grandfathers fathers done it, means they can do it...
Ireland is in the European Union and I do get what your saying that certain minorities ere take the piss but us irish have done enough damage ourselves to fish stocks...
If you have a problem with Eastern Europeans getting drunk on a pier you fished for thirty years I suggest you do something about rather then writing about it on a forum...
I'd rather be fishing..

Harsh words there.
Only joking. Everybody is entitled to an opinion no matter who you are.
I can agree with a lot of people write here.
I'm not being biased here.
Bit the general consensus from what I hear from lots of anglers around different spots is the same.
There not doing it for sport or anything
Just greed. Now the Irish man / men have done it to ( netted fish / took more then they should )
But I have seen it myself. And posted on it.
5 men pulling in lines of mackerel netting bass needless slaughter and more then they need.
And you can't say a word as your called a racist or something.
Honestly know 3 foreigners living in Waterford have tents set up on beaches
Net all night
Sell the fish to restaurants
And then work all day and send money back to there country.
Now I'm not starting anything here about who should and who shouldn't be in Ireland.
As we are now a European Union
But I am saying this.
Needless slaughter of fish and to many people taking more then enough for a weeks food a day is a joke.
And do you know something
There's nothing anyone can do.
Anyhow please read the next line.
I am not putting down any culture : country : colour : creed.
Just my 2 cents to which I'm allowed to do.
And if I can't say that here without being banned
Well maybe I should use another forum.
