elvers...

#1 Post by lucky13 »

hey lads,
just wondering does anybody know if elvers can be found in cork,or even in ireland?
im not looking for places to look for them, just maybe some evidence that they find their way to ireland from the sargasso sea.
i know they can be found fairly easily across the pond, but i have never heard or spoke to anybody that has used them over here...ive had a look online and cant find anything that suggests they exist here...any help at all would be only the grandest.
cheers :)

I know that there was some research done on the eel population in the Corrib river in Galway a few years back. When I was a in zoology labs about 5 years ago we did dissections on eels taken from the Corrib to look for parasites. I think there may have been a commercial fishery for them at some stage, but can't be sure. If you google the words 'silver' 'eel' 'Galway' and 'elver' you should get some more information.

They can be found down here in wexford with ease. They used to be fished in the slaney by local fishermen for years, they'd store them in submerged barrels in the river and once a week a truck would collect them and bring up North i think, but that's all stopped new due to the conservation laws.
There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot

I believe they were shipped abroad for consumption, to countries such as France or Holland where they are eaten regularly.

in spain they were eaten at christmas time traditionally, but due to over fishing they ended up having to make "fish protein" based elvers to continue the tradition - with mouth and eye drawn on!!!

You could just use small lip hooked sandeel, they make a excellent bait for seatrout in estuary,s. Spun back or under a float.
I don't think the eel fishing will be opening next year or any time in the foreseeable future.
