Good winds bad winds?

Hi lads
Are winds from certain directions better for fishing than others? I'll hear someone say "ah no point fishing yesterday bloody westerlies" or something to that effect and I won't have a breeze (pun) what they're on about?
Surely it's different for each part of the country.

I'm in Dublin and I am going out in Dublin bay on a friends boat tomorrow and the wind will be blowing mostly South East. is that good or bad?

wind from the West NW or SW are what i would be hoping for along our stretch, north NE E or SE can make things very unplesent at times realy depends on strenght, wind against tide can chop it up a fair bit aswell.

as john says north NE E or SE are ones to watch for can churn things up a nice bit, anything west is always a plus for boating in around the east coast i find

For comfort, what you ideally want is an offshore breeze blowing from the land and calming any incoming swell. Old lore used to be that the fish swim against the wind and end up inshore in these conditions, tho I expect science might have discounted that by now. Then there's the other old lore about an east wind putting the fish off the feed. Dont know what conclusion science has come to on that one, but over a lifetime of various kinds of fishing, I've noticed it to be true more often than not, especially of a north-east wind and especially on fresh water.
