Shore caught sharks
Well is it possible? I dont mean tope or hounds I mean sharks like porgies or blues. I remember reading a book years ago and the author reckoned a porbeagle snatched a pollack from his lure. Where would the deepest part of the coast be? surely with the warm seas this summer it might be possible!!

Re: Shore caught sharks
The numbers of sharks around the Coast has crashed since Jacks day
I did a fair bit of research over about five years and has a few reliable sightings around the Clare coastline.
To the best of my knowledge there isnt anyone putting in the serious effort and time that would be needed to find a proper shark.
Most Porgie sightings would occur around well known pollack marks.
There is a deep water trench running from the Aran Isles, if you are serious find that and start camping out
Good luck

The Truth is often stumbled upon by men, most of whom pick themselves up and hurry along as if nothing ever happened.

Sure is a great read, getting a shark from the shore would be something else but I'm sure someone has tried and got one?

Re: Shore caught sharks
I know a few years ago a local man who fishes for Conger's all the time had a skate grab onto a small strap he had and spat it out on the surface. Baitdigger can back me up on this one, didnt believe it when I heard it myself at first. Was meant to be a porgie robbing peoples macks in Dunlickey last year too. I think the main reason Jack shine fished the Green Island and Ballyreen is that the wind suited him in these marks to send out a dubby trail and balloon float.paul skelly wrote:Or what about skate from the shore ? Re: Shore caught sharks
Skate have been caught off the shore from beaches - Whitegate in Cork and several in Kerry - and even the pier in Fenit (109 lbs). There are rumours of them being taken in Donegal too, at Rathmullen and elsewhere. I've been told of people being broken off in the autumn on the old head at Louisburgh in Mayo which is possible given all the skate in Clew Bay. I am surprised we don't see them show up elsewhere although the tend to like the deep water trenches and fast running tides...
As for sharks, Green Island in Clare was famous for them and attracted them because of the large stocks of pollack. I've been out there in a boat and it's very rough and remarkably deep - there's a channel that runs out up which the pollack run, presumably with sharks on their tails!
You find deep water and rich waters, you will find sharks. I think the North Mayo coast is full of possibilities, but its a bugger to get to the shore across most of it (pure sucking bog full of poxy midges) although local retired (we hope!) salmon netsmen will tell you that porgies competed with the seals for their catch in winter. A massive porgie was netted (accidentally on a lobster pot rope, no seriously, that's what they said) and it beat the current Irish record, by over 100 lbs.
As to whether they are available from the shore, I am not so sure. If you really want to know about how to tackle big sharks from the shore, I recommend you contact NZ anglers. They do it regularly.

We were boat fishing the mouth of Mulroy bay a couple of years back and we watched a porbeagle cruising around within casting distance of the rocks at Melmore!

Re: Shore caught sharks
For anyone interested in Jack Shine have a listen to this podcast.
EP 52. Mick White & Jack Shine Shore Sharks
Recorded in 2011. Jack Shine is an Irish shore fishing legend. Sadly, he died in 1997, but his legacy of over 40 Porbeagle Sharks caught from the shore has never been repeated, not even with one fish, and possibly never will. Towards the end of Jack's life, Mick White spent quite a bit of time in his company documenting his achievements which he details and shares with us here.
