noob, sligo, help :)

hey all, im new and sorry if this is in the wrong place.

im new to salt water, more at home in a lake but looking to try new things

just wondering about good places in sligo for mackerel or pollock.

also it would e great if anyone could offer some need to know tips and or a small list of newbie essential tackle

Tip 1: Fish for pollack at dusk, Fish for mackeral when sunny

Hi

If you have some transport, Aughris Head is a good spot, at dusk on a filling tide for pollack. Get on the trail near the pier and keep walking until you reach the landslide down which you scramble onto the rocks. There is a spectacularly deep hole opposite a small island that fishes well for large pollack - 5/6 lbs common - especially into darkness. Top to mid water lures are the business. Pollack like a bit of movement in the water as well so if theres a bit of chop and surf, all the better.

The same mark can throw up good catches of mackerel in daylight on a coming tide. Mackerel will come closer inshore nearing darkness on a coming tide also... you can pick up dogfish off the pier and I am told the odd flounder, but only around high water. It's quite shallow. The beaches in the area will give you flatfish, the odd dogfish at night at slack water, and reputedly the odd bass.

thank you both, very helpfull got a small bit of tackle today, just finished work now so going eating and trying my luck at aughris head wish me luck :L

and yes i have transport, willing to travel a wee bit if its worth the spin.

ehm 'filling tide', 'coming tide', 'slack water'? sorry im not realy up to scratch on the terminolagy :L

filling tide or coming tide - tide is coming in

slack water - period around high or low water when tide is not moving much - predatory fish tend to go off the feed in these conditions so it can be a bit quiet but it depends on the mark / species
