Fahan Beach/Leenan Pier, 09/05/06

Duration: Fahan, 11am-1pm, Leenan, 1.30pm-5.30pm

Tide: 1 hour either side of low water at Fahan, rising at Leenan

Weather: Scorchio!

Bait: Mackeral

Rigs: 2 hook flappers

Results: Fahan: 1 lsd, 1 thornie
Leenan: 8 grey gurnard

Me and me Da arrived at Fahan and had agreed to fish it for 2 hours then head on up the Swilly to Leenan to fish the flood for a few hours.

First cast at Fahan landed me a dog, quiet then for 2 hours until me Da landed his first ever thornie on the last cast! I'm no good at guessing weights - 4 lbs maybe. There's a pic in my photo gallery.

We then packed up as agreed and headed up to Leenan. There were 2 belfast fellas already fishing at the pier so we decided to try the rocks beyond for a while. It was very rough ground and just didnt feel right so we returned to the pier an hour later just as the Belfast lads were packing up. They informed us it was the wrong time of the year and we had more chance of catching a cow than a fish - looking at the rubbish they had left behind them expained their lack of fish - for bait they were using earthworms, sweetcorn and those dead, dyed-purple, pre-packed ragworm u can buy in some tackle shops.

After we cleaned up their mess (apart from the stuff that was floating out to sea ) we got fishing the clean ground below the pier and straight away the rod tips were happily bouncing away. In the next 2 hours or so I got 5 grey gurnard (a first for me as well), the oul fella got 3.

Sunburnt faces all round - cracker day to be out.

Sounded like a pleasant days fishing shamrock. Must get up to Lenan again one of these weekends.

I'd say the pier could get a bit crowded at the weekends Pete. Not mad crowded like, but there's not room for many rods like.

Gonna give Fahan another rattle at low water tomorro afternoon

Used to fish it alot when I was living in Derry and it was rare enough there wasn't somebody on it, thats the problem with piers though...too handy for macky bashers and lazy feckers to fish.

I think there's a wee river there alright that empties out onto the beach I think, not sure what it's called. The pier is on round to the right of the beach, just before the wee bay turns the corner onto foul, rocky ground.

Fished Fahan again from 12-4pm today, low water at 12. No thornies this time - just a doggie and a wee foul-hooked dab.

Had two dogfish, a plaice and two thornback rays off leenan pier this morning. All took sandeel. This mark seems to be producing well so far this year. The bottom is pure sand so very tackle friendly. The only bit to watch out for is to the right of the pier where lots of scrap metal was once dumped.
