Looking for marks in Westport area; early May trip

#1 Post by alastairg »

Hi All,

The in-laws have a house booked near Ballycroy for a week at the start of May; I'm going as I've been promised I'm allowed to take the young brother in-law out fishing. I've only ever fished Achill island (and much later in the year).
Is there any sport to be had their this time of year?
What's the best location to head for (don't mind driving a reasonable distance).

Thanks All,

I have only been fishing around Westport once so can't be of much help with any marks. However, I would recommend calling into the tackle shop called 'A Shore Thing'. The time I was there the owner was very helpful and gave me directions to numerous marks in the locality. He also stocks decent bait.

if you are staying in ballycroy,,head for bangor and you have to go through srahnamanragh,,well half way between the two ,,there is a turn to the left at knockmoyleen,,,turn right there and head on down to doona,,,,there is a beach there and i have never failed for a flatty bashing session there,,,its not terrible deep but an incoming tide will bring on the flats,,,even better at night,,also on the beach itself have lug cast which hints why the flats come in,,trout are taken here too,,if you go south there is dorreel and has plenty of channels for trout etc,if you want to try the other surf beaches best bet contact doug,,,,il be not too far from balycroy tonight so give me a buzz when your up and il see if i have any more detailed info for ya////water temps are still well down yet
