I haven't tried but the earliest I have taken them would be around April. It all depends on water temp. What temp do we have these days?

Water temp is about 4 C, April is usually earliest for me. :D

jaysus pat thats cold :shock: i have never seen it getting below 7c up around here myself.
i have not been out since i got my 30 species rockling at christmas ( health issues) so have no idea about temps at the moment. Have you been out much? any Fish? cant get access to the other site at the moment to catch up.

Had one this time last year in bray. Was out on Saturday around dun laoghaire water temp was between 4-5 degrees and not a tap on the rods

Just Had a look at M2 buoy 7.9C out there today, so things are starting to warm up 8)

Out over the weekend, North Bull, South Bull and Donabate, not a touch :cry: but water surface temp showing as 8c

Yep John very cold and nothing but pin whiting and the odd small dab. :(

Hopefully it will start to heat up soon. :D

I've caught them in January in berehaven co cork ,just single macks up in the lights while anchored at night,a few must stay about in winter down there

yes mackfish , we normaly get them around paddys in donegal bay (for a week or so ) an then not back till the summer!hope there not as late as they were last year!

They were in the swilly early last year but then the red tide took care of that!

Seen a shoal of something bubbling at the surface at my wrasse mark in North Clare last week, can only assume it was macks and there was a seal following it.
Species list 2013.Conger, Launce, Pollock, Ballan Wrasse, Dogfish, 3b rockling, Bull Huss, Mackeral, Tub Gurnard.

Species list 2012. Mackeral, Pollock, Coalie, Bass, Dab, Weeverfish, Bull Huss, Poor Cod, Grey Gurnard, Ballan wrasse, Long spined sea scorpion, Conger, Pouting.

it was easier to catch bass than mackerel last year!!!
Live out on the beautiful Beara Peninsula. Always willing to assist visiting anglers.

Easily known you werent fishing north clare :roll: I caught loads of macks in early may last year but the seemed to die off after that for the rest of the summer.
