Marks for MEGRIM from the shore?

i would love to catch my first megrim this year
and would really appreciate info on reliable shore marks (if there is such a thing.. has anybody had any experience or are these fish only caught in deeper water?)
i know that i am gonna have to travel a long way for them so would like to see my chance of getting one being reasonably good, if at all possible
suggested best times of the year to target them?

You have set yourself a very difficult task ! Megs are rarely found inside 20/25 fathoms and are almost absent from the Irish sea area. If you can find some shore spot with access to this depth of water (another difficult task) ! then you have a chance. Off the top of my head I cannot think of any place around the coast with this depth close in. Bantry bay has some of the deepest water close to the shore that I am aware of, other than that mabey somewhere along the north coast ?? Generally the biggest Megs come from deeper water.

thanks for the replies. yeah, i was pretty aware that they are deeper water species but it was just in the off chance there was somewhere that they were targetable from the shore. a long shot i was thinking, but i just wasnt totally sure...
Holeopen, there arent any megrim up this way (north coast), and thats why im keen to catch my first, but maybe a chance of them off the northwest coast, west coast and the south coast.
just thought i'd throw this out there but, it seems, the chances are that i will have to get onto a boat..

the boys are right what they are saying however they have been recorded in belmullet(mayo) from the shore but that was many years ago long with brill.i wouldnt waste the money on fuel to come down here to go hunting for them specially.they seem to like the same type of ground as sole

Given your penchant for flatties on the fly, could I recommend this outfit for deepwater megrim; the Penn Senator 9/0 should just about hold an AFTM 25 Hi-D ultra rapid extrafast sink line and enough backing to get you down 25 fathoms. It would also probably suffice for when you upgrade to halibut!

nice1 Brian, thanks for that. some interesting things to know there but it pretty much confirms my suspicions that i could well be wasting my time trying to find somewhere from the shore to target these fish..
as you say, and i could well believe it, there might have been a chance of one from the shore there.... many years ago.
but anyway, cheers. a boat trip is looking more likely by the minute if i wish to get one.. might consider it out of donegal

very good JW. would u have one of these set ups yourself..?
dont fancy trying to throw a #25 line tho.. it would be like trying to flyfish with a length of rope
do fancy a halibut on one all the same (well, a wee one anyway.. )

im pretty convinced now that it might just not be feasible/appropriate to target megrim form the shore man.. its not only find the depth of water by the sounds of it but also finding the right environment and somewhere where catching one offers a reasonable chance!..
aye, a boat will give me a better chance i reckon. thanks anyway! would love to get one
