Fish ID: Poor cod or pouting??

Hi Lads,

I was out fishing over the weekend and caught these two fish in the pictures below. I'm thinking that fish 1 is a poor cod and fish 2 may be a pouting but I can't be sure. Anyone out there that can confirm the identification of either of them for me?

They look like a poor cod and pouting to me :wink:

Top one poor cod: the anal fin doesn't reach the anus
Bottom one pouting: anal fin passes anus
Or so I'm lead to believe .............. :wink:

Use this as the rule. The poor cod has the poorer (lesser) anal fin

Thanks for the help lads. I'll go with the poor cod and pouting identification. Also, Donal that's a great image you posted and should clear up any doubt I have in the future! My target of 20 species from the shore this year is off to a good start..

I taught it was 2 pouting but I was wrong thanks for posting the picture that explains the difference. That's good to know now for the future. Best of luck on the 20 species.
