How many rods?

#1 Post by [Barry] »

Hi,

Just wondering do most people take 2 beach casters or 1 on beach fishing trips? Do people bring a spinning rod aswell to cast when the 1 or 2 beach casters are out? What's the ideal setup?

Thanks
Barry

All depends on conditions and targets. Rays and huss would be a two rod set up for me. Tope I can only fish one rod in the way I want to. I dont spin while I am waiting for a bite as you cannot concentrate on both things IMHO, missed some screaming bites in the past while feathering for mackerel and having big baits out at the same time. Lure fishing I want to be as light as possible so only one rod for that.
Whatever you are comfortable and confident with.

I usually bring 2 rods with me to fish at distance and closer at the same time. However, I'm often so busy with the first one that I don't set up the second one.

2rods for beach fishing one rod for spinning. It's mainly beach/rock fishing I do so 2rods are best for that IMHO .

When beach fishing I would always used two beachcasters, unless weed was very bad and then I would just use the one.
Sometimes I do bring a spinning rod but very rarely and only to certain marks close to rocks in relatively calm conditions. As Baitdigger said it is not possible to concentrate on both baitfishing and lurefishing.

With beachcasters I would generally start fishing them both at different distances, maybe with different baits until I find the distance the fish are at and their preferred bait and then focus both rods into that zone.

tis my method also..tho sometimes i fish three, two on the stand and one up the beach a bit in a different area on a sand spike stand with a trace for flatties or a big bait on a big hook..using a different trace on each with different baits/cocktails/hook sizes when you get the info from the first bite, arrange your rods, trace, bait and cast distance for that specific bite, although if i am fishing a 3rd rod i will usually do something different with that...
a spinning rod in your bag can be deadly, often i have witnessed bass not taking baits preferring the chase of a lure not even 10 yards out and if tis calm,a float on your spinning rod can be seriously effective.i can find the time to spin between changing baits but i am more focused on my bait rods.carrying a spinning rod to the beach is definatly not to be shunned in my book.

it all depends on what your target species and venue will dictate. if it's just general beach fishing we'd nail a big beachcaster out to the horizon each and fish a light spinning rod into the surf each. that way you can cover more ground and when fishing in close there is no need for beachcasters. a light spinning rod will give you loads of fun with the flounder and stuff in close. if you scale your set up down a bit you can maxamize your fun for general beach work with the added chance of hitting something decent in close on the light gear. it would'nt be the first time we've hit 4lb bass and 3lb sea trout on spinning gear just 20 yards out :P

i have seen a lad fishing 4 rods on a bass mark ! besides the fact one decent fish could tangle the whole lot it just seems a bit greedy or maybe desperate?

I don't think I could deal with more than two and the minimum should be two also. A lot of lost time if you break off and don't have a back up.

I use a beach caster and a shorter spinning rod, one in close and one a bit further out, any more than 2 rods and your just gonna be too busy to enjoy the fishing and more chance of missing bites while fluting around with baits etc

I prefer to fish with one rod only. More relaxing and much better success rates. Using two or more rods at the same time is complete and utter stress for me. It just takes out the enjoyment of fishing and the experience of being one with your surroundings if I have to cope with missed bites, tangles, sloppy re-baiting in a hurry jobs - sorry, no way, I'm not cut out for that. I have a few tackled up spare rods always with me normally, just in case, but they stay in the car until really needed. Same as all the other stuff which I don't need immediately but I have it available when I need it. Slow fishing = bliss :D

usually when i use a 2nd or 3rd rod,i get the first one in the water, then the 2nd and or 3rd.when they are all in the water i will bait up a second trace for each rod and hang them off my stand.when i reel in i just clip off the trace and clip on a prebaited one, cast out and rebait the trace ive just brought in.if i am using a 3rd rod its usually for a different species than the first two rods.distance and cast direction should help with any big biters trying to run thru your other lines, and using 2 rods on a tripod and one on a sand spike a small distance from your tripod helps with this also.
you should never have nothing to do when fishing in my eyes...
unless your spending the day at the river for trout with a bag of wurthers originals...

cutting lengths of leader to spec and tying a snap swivel to one end can help with this, even better if you wrap em on a rig winder, snap swivel first so your tying end is last on the winder, real easy to tie and wind back onto your reel, quick too.

Generally fish a beachcaster , throw out the bait , pull up a seat and sit back and chill out ... sometimes I'll bring a spinning rod and let loose a few chosen lures but mostly it's cast.relax and take in the sights and sounds.... that's why i fish

I usually take 2 rods, most of the time its a 4-6oz to get a bit of distance and a 2-4 oz estuary rod for a little closer casting.
