What rigs do you use for conger?

#1 Post by redzerologhlen »

Was fishing for conger last night and I hooked a big one, well over 20lb's I think but I forget to bring a drop net with me and as I was trying to bring it up the steps of the pier the trace broke at the crimp and it went back into the abyss once more, completly my own fault for over crimping without the right tool for the job. It doesnt bother me too much that I didnt get my photo and manage to land it but I dont like leaving fish with a hook stuck in them even though I had her hooked perfectly in her top lip. The trace was made of 100lb mono with a 6/0 kamasan and a barrel swivel at the other end, sliding lead on my mainline with a paperclip as a weak link. Is there a knot that would work on 100lb line without making it weak, I want to try and catch it again to try and get the other hook out.

useually i use a running ledger with a 6/0 hook with a mackrel flapper, 100 lb line is plenty just dont use crimps use a spin link because as you probably no congers love to spin.

Generally Pulleys/weaklink 200lb Mono down to a Cox and Wraule Meat Hook(Great Hook) 6-10/0 (Maybe Heavy duty but if you get a decent Conger that straightens a Hook you wouldnt be to happy). Its tough allright for knots. The one i use for Mono to hook i couldnt tell you the name i,ve tried finding it online but it is Tremendous.

il try to describe it but probally wont make sense!

Pass the Mono through the eye of the hook have your other index finger Placed on the hook shank,Form 2 loops with the mono around your finger and the shank. Now take your tag end and pass it back up underneath the loops you have created and back over the eye of the hook (The opposite way you put it through) then the usual Moiston and Tighten it up!Never lost a fish with it!

The closet i could find is this http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/baja-knot/ the same in principle!i just call it the twice aorund the finger knot :D very simple!Mono Suffix btw!

either snell the leader to the hook and crimp the other end or try a reversed clinch knot. Wrap down as opposed to up, pinch the two lines about 6" up from the swivel or hook, then wrap down 3 to 6 times. It closes down very tight this way.

There is another one but I haven't tried it myself, called the Centauri knot that can tie both mono and steel. This knot is perfect for any diameter mono, but perfect for larger diameter mono of 1mm upwards. The knot can also be doubled up and butted against each other to make the perfect join for mono leaders. The knot can also be used to tie steel strand to swivels, hooks and non return slides.

I just made up 3 traces there now, snell to the hook and a reverse clinch to the swivel, It seems a fairly strong setup.
