adding weight to lure's?

when fishing with lures i find that there's not enough weight to cast to where i want,..


will adding a weight mess the whole thing up!? any tips please guys!!

First off check the casting weight rating on your rod as a 7-14 gram rod will cast small plugs with ease unlike a 20-40gram which is stiffer also your line plays a part too ,is it sufficiantly filling the spool and of an adequate weight to do the job .I find 12lb is strong enough to cover most jobs but for rough ground you may need to bump it up but distance will be lost. Inline weights can be added to some lures but for plugs itll hamper the action

Just thinking splitshot might work to if spread apart but you wouldnt gain much

Also try some heavier lures depending on what your after, kiltys, savage gear eels etc

A correctly spooled reel with braid 16-20lb will improve distance.
Also, a lure that is aerodynamic. I find curved lures (toby, koster, kilty somewhat) can flutter in the wind and can rob me of distance.
My favourite lure at the moment is the Maria Viva Parade in 21g. In fact, its actually a bullet with a treble!

Adding external weight to lures will upset the action in most cases. What lures are you trying to add weight too? If they are hollow you can gradually inject them with water very easily which will add plenty of weight. Try this...

Heat a neddle with a candle flame/lighter and melt a small hole in the upper area of the body.
Gradually fill it with 1-2mls at a time of water using a syringe. Best to do this by the water as you can cast each time you add and see if the action is still ok.
Once your happy use a heated needle again to plug up the hole - if needed.

I've done this with crystal minnows and mag pro copies and it works well. The later now casts as good as the real thing, HOWEVER it doesnt float anymore so its worth bearing that in mind!

Thanks for the many reply's, i understand whats being said here. also watching a few lads and ladette's lure fishing i see that i actually have what it takes, decent rod with a great casting action for lure's i was lucy to pull in an amazing Bass lure last week and the size and weight makes casting a dream,

was fishing bannow island this weekend and the wind was behind me, couldnt believe it. caught nothing tho..

German sprats and dextor wedges are great for casting at distance when spinning everybody should have them in their spinning box, a quick retrive may be needed in hallow water as they can sink fast, great lures for big bass
