Gurnards

Hi guys,

I was wondering what rigs you find work best for Gurnards - hook size and bait? I'm thinking about heading out on the boat soon and would like to target some new species.

Standard paternoster rig, size 1/0 hooks baited with mack strip over sandy/mixed ground does the job. Have had them on baited feathers too. They don't seem too fussy any time I've targeted them! Definitely one of the nicest fish I've eaten too.

Cheers! Yeh I've heard they are lovely to eat. I was up in Cavistons recently and it was on the menu but I went for the Turbot instead!

catch your own man, much tastier than buying I've always had good success (from the boat) with baited feathers like the infamous Kilmore Killers in read or a simple three boom rig with a bit of the odd bling (orange, red and yellow) has done the trick. Make sure you fish right on the bottom, sandy or mixed ground is grand, use a 10-12 oz lead on the drift if currents are fast. Hope this helps and tight lines!

Cheers for the advice! I have a good few booms in the box so that shouldn't be a problem! Cant wait to get out in the boat. Its been too long!!!

If fishing on the drift during big tides id go three down on a flowing trace, search for Greg scissor hands McKinney on you tube, during small tides they will rise up to feed, so 3 up works best. Id never go bigger than a size two hook. Small thin strips of mac belly can't be beat, and if bites are slack somtimes a rattling bead above your boom, or at the top of your three up can work wonders!
