Before we get a lynching mob ready for Somedose, I need to let people know that I did receive a PM from him a little while back. He was in possession of the figures for the total number of bass caught by the Marine Institute vessels, both inshore and offshore. He had misread my post and failed to notice that I was only talking about offshore bass.
He apologized for his mistake and asked me could I not make a big deal out of his mistake on the forum. I agreed and as the thread had not received much attention lately I thought I would let it lie there.
I think it was a genuine mistake on his part and as his intention was to make sure that any figures we use to make our case as bass anglers are verifiable he can not be blamed for that.
I hope this clarifies matters and thanks to those that supported me.

I know there has been an awful lot said here but in the last few weeks in my area the inshore boat activity has really gone through the roof.Im not sure what they are doing pots maybe but i think not we can all talk about weather, red tide and so on but from past experience of this kind of thing going on it never ends in a good out come.Good fish are very far and few between now, i can only say things look like getting a lot worse .

Apologies for the mis-understandings earlier in the thread. However, new information has come to light in the form of new bass data which has not been published yet. As John says in one of his previous posts, only 66 bass were found in offshore waters. This is based on the Irish Groundfish Survey data up to 2007. However, the data for 2008-2011 has not yet been made public as the data has not yet been finalised. What is clear however it that it is highly probable has been more than 66 fish caught in offshore waters. In addition the Marine Institute work closely with IFI in relation to bass and in fact have quite a large data base of bass information (predominately from anglers) at their disposal.

Things are beginning to change though as management of the stock is being taken more seriously. However it is highly possible that indeed the future for this species does indeed involve commercial exploitation by Irish boats. Maybe not next year or even the year after, but it may be possible that the IFO will get their way. Note that I only say MAY BE POSSIBLE

Cheers Colm, I'll check that out. However what I meant was in relation to getting actual physical samples from fish i.e. scales.
