Bright headlights on water

I was fishing on a beach last night (blankety blank) and there was another guy further down with a searchlight head lamp on which never went off the entire time he fished. There was little surf last night and my thinking is you are better keeping these lights off the water at anytime but especially on a quite/calm night like last night. The thing was on the water all the time and moving and lighting areas even beyond where you would expect the fish to be. When rebaiting the guy was holding the bait towards the sea and again lighting the water casting out same thing it never went off. Then he would spend time looking at me with this headlight in my face. If we wait til dark often to fish a beach should we be careful with light on the water or does it make any difference?

That bloody mobile lighthouse.Rocketman it did'nt stop someone we know from hammering fish last night

.In all honesty unless bassing in gin clear conditions at night at short range i rekon it does'nt put other fish off.I always have a light of sorts to watch my rod tips and generally it does'nt affect my bass catches[unless gin clear]

Apart from being blinded by someone constantly shining a light in my face, which is very annoying.

. I dont think that lights can cause low fish numbers for general fishing. Plenty of marks have street lighting and cars with headlights back and forth. Plus some people say the lights can attract fish from a distance.

I generally use the minimum amount of light that I can, just use the headlamp to set up, bait hooks and when retrieving. I would think that bass been such cautious fish would be put off by lights on the beach - maybe OK to have a headlamp on all the time if you are casting 100 m plus but I generally just cast out 30-50 m when bass fishing. But I would definitely avoid shining the lamp on the water.

Earlier this year I was fishing a beach and a couple of guys 60-70 m down from me had their lamps on the whole time. As they were leaving they stopped for a chat, they had caught a few flounder, a dogfish and coalfish but no bass whereas I had about 5 bass at that stage. We were using the same bait (lug/razor). After they left the bass really came on the feed.

At the beginning of the year I was fishing another beach and a guy with a lighthouse on his head was illuminating the whole shoreline and periodically shining it towards me (maybe the same guy you had to deal with). I did not have a bite that night whereas I had some good fish the previous night under idential conditions.

So while that doesn't prove that headlamps scare fish away I think that it would certainly be better to fish with your lamp off most of the time.

If guys are that afraid of the dark they should stick to fishing in Daylight, the reason fishing at night is better is because.......... its dark and the fish feed closer. turn the lights off!!!!

I'm at it a long time and in the days of the Tilly lamp you would always keep it behind the tackle box so it would not shine on to the water. In them days it was just been polite

We have a strict no lights and not talking rule when fishing at night. We have headlamps for getting back from the marks. We use them occasionally to put bait on but always pointed away from the water and a good bit up the beach. They way we see it, Bass feed here most nights and it will be pitch black and quiet. If we turn up with lights and start talking it will immediatlely be noticed. Just my opinion. Ye may catch a few small bass but that bigger more cautious bass will probably move away.

i dont fish for them, never have, might do some day but its not really up there on my list of things to do, would rather go wrassing or pollocking anyday

have always wondered if bass would be valued as much if they weren't prized as a table fish.

plus, between new species and new PB's im doing alright without getting a bass thank you very much

Lads unless U have night vision eyes, everybody needs light on the beach at night. I was out on Monday night i have a Coleman northstar + very bright head light. Never went of! and had fish every cast or there about. And I fish Wexford alot at night iv had bass with the same light set up so I don't think light affects the fish. Sure iv been out some nights and the moon would nearly light the beach on its own and the fishing was great .

Ha ha you are right, and Im as guilty as anoyone of this.

The way I see it, there are Bass, and then the fish who wish they were Bass..!!
