Fly fishing

#1 Post by MBuckley87 »

Hi I know this is not the forum for this but I am heading to Kerry in 4 weeks and I was thinking of doing some fishing on the lakes of killarney just wondering can I just cast and wait or do I have to fly fish and if I do how do I cast never fished a river or a lake before! what sort of bait should I use? I am also using dingle bay charters to go out for a 4 hour trip on the boat another first I am certainly looking forward too.

Hi,

First off the lakes and rivers of killarney offer fantastic sport but be sure to check if the water requires a permit before you fish and that you have a licence if targetting salmon or seatrout. As far as tactics fly fishing will take most fish especially brownies on the lakes .Float fished worms on carra lake do well,a bubble float with four to six feet of 8lb drennan sub surface green leader and a black abberdeen long shank will be fine or if spinning mepps and flying cs work well . If you try the rivers free lining worms or if the current is slow use a controller or bouncing betty bomb to help cover ground. Watch for submerged boulders and slack water and work your baits slowly through and no harm keeping a bait ledgered in the current if your struggleing . As with sea fishing vary hook size and leader diameter untill you succeed .

Tight lines ,
Stephen

I have never fished a lake so alot of what ya have just said is over my head I wouldn't think I could cast for fly fishing looks complicated. Can I just cast in like I do in the sea and wait for a bite or is the lake different? Yeah I will drop into oneills and sort out what I need before I head out. Thanks for reply.

Distance is no issue in game fishing as there will always be fish close in its about working the water in front of you determining the features and putting your bait there.Id avoid fly fishing if your on a short holiday unless you are getting tuition as you need practice so you can cast safely and itll take away from your fishing time. ill post up links to the spinning and worm rigs you can use now

Use this for rivers with slow to medium current and walk it down keeping in touch all the time or replace the controller with a lead if you want to hold in a position

I am literally gonna spend a single day fishing the lakes I have managed to mask it as I picnic with the family plus I have a charter booked the following day for dingle fishing from the boat so will be slaughtered if I push my luck any further so fly fishing is out of the mix and I'm gonna stay clear of the rivers just stick to the lake
