Fixed spool

What would be a good distance to achieve with a fixed spool using 4oz and 5oz weights. OTG

If people would like to share.....
What strength line do you use ?

Do you use a shockleader ?

What strength shockleader do you use ?

Which knot do you use for joining the two ?


For shore fishing at a nice distance , not tournament casting.

Any casting distance will catch fish because sometimes they can be found very close in,
but if you are looking to get a greater distance on a fixed spool reel then i would
use braid with this knot to attach your mono shockleader.

I know braid is expensive but it has a finer diameter than mono,but if you want to use
mono then there will be a knot on this link for another knot for mono mail line to mono shockleader,
and shockerleader should be 40/50lb basically 1 oz =10 lb shockleader and then to the strengh
of mainline mono is down to what sort of ground you are fishing over.

i like to use a 18 mainline usually a red ice or sufix and a length 40lb leader (1.5 times the length of your rod) tied with this knot http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xZDlrhMA-8
usually with a 3 to a 5 oz weight...capable of most fights,theres a lad on this site caught a 106lb common skate on this size get-up down kerry and an old friend of mine caught an 80lb conger on the same setup.speaks for itself..hope this helps best of luck..

Be sure to use a shockleader greenthumb, the mainline itself won't be able to take the strain of being cast with lead and baits or even just lead.

Generally a snap here travels anywhere except out to sea..



as mentioned above for safety use 10 lb of leader for every oz of lead and try not to go below 60lb when using 5oz leads and over, trace and baits add considerably to overall weight being cast.

provided you have good general setup, ie, a decent rod and reel, matched to 15-20 lb mainline, a reasonable OTG will go 70 to 100 yards with baits, add up to another 50 when just casting.

same knot as total fishing vid but i very carefully melt the tag end on the shockleader to prevent it slipping,prob overkill but i like to be sure to be sure also i test all knots with a good pull as every now and then one will fail ,better to fail under your pressure than a good fish if you are testing a braid knot be carefull it cuts through flesh like cheese wire
as for distance its all down to style and what rod you use a good cast with 3 bait clipped down for most anglers would be 80 to 100 yards
distance isnt the bee end to catching but is a usefull tool to have when required

have to agree with roger casting to far out has cost me a few comps over the years but its so nice to see the weight fly out into the horizon
