An important article on the economical benefits of angling?

#1 Post by John D »

I came across this very recent article and thought it was an article as many people as possible should see. It outlines the huge economical benefits gained from angling:

The article makes sense relative to tourism angling's potential within the modern world, however the writer makes a point which is very true relative to Ireland's position as a sport fishing destination and needs to be addressed ASAP.

I quote: "Public access to water, especially from shore, is increasingly scarce, laments Mr Mackin. Besides, rules and regulations often make things difficult, with some fish populations receiving too much protection while others are getting too little, he explains."

I know from hard experience trying to set up a sport fishing enterprise which was endorsed by all the necessary public agencies and local businesses that in Ireland today; private people with no vested interest can step out of the woodwork and block your access so scuppering your project before it even gets off the ground. Forget about recession, getting up off your backside, or entrepreneurial spirit, these negative, selfish, insular people will and are holding this country and you back, mark my words I could write a book on it.

But that is not to say it is all plain sailing for everyone who wants to go fishing.

Public access to water, especially from shore, is increasingly scarce, laments Mr Mackin. Besides, rules and regulations often make things difficult, with some fish populations receiving too much protection while others are getting too little, he explains.

For those with money, none of this poses a problem. Fresh and salt-water American-style tournaments, with powerful over-equipped boats, are popular and entice many younger anglers. Some anglers even fork out vast sums to go fishing in exotic destinations all over the world
the latter part of this is the important piece. for those with money

Ash - If you would like to include an interesting perspective from saltwater I can supply a chapter or two - focusing particularly on the section - 'Irish people dont know much about fishing hence we better import somebody who does'
