R.N.L.I Species hunt 14th July (Ideas and thoughts thread)

#1 Post by Sparks43 »

After the success of the Mad Haddocks Day out last year myself and creep have been having a big brainstorming session about doing something for the R.N.L.I.

For the first time in known history one of my fishing buddies came out with a good idea when he mentioned doing a Species hunt  .So this idea got embedded in my mind and started many different and strange thoughts. After some fermented beverages and conversation with others of a like mind we have settled on the 14th July as the date as this corresponds with one of our trips.

So 3 Months to get everything ready so time to let you all know what we have at the moment.

This is a Pairs event

1:Event time is between 9am to 9pm with a check in time of 8 am.

The starting location will be Central Dublin but we are hoping to be able to organize starting points at different parts of the country.

2:You can fish whatever venue you like
If i am right this will be the biggest rover competition that has ever been attempted on these shores. From the starting point you can choose whatever beach, pier or rock mark you would like. The only limitation is time so if you fancy driving 4 hours to your fishing spot then by all means go for it But be aware that if you are not back at the designated spot by 9pm then all your hard work counts for nothing.

3: Entry Fee?

€20 per Pair so €10 per Angler is the maximum we will charge and all profits will go straight to the R.N.L.I (Only printing/lamination costs are taken which i hope will be basically zero)

4: How do we score points?
This is a species hunt so if it swims then try and catch it (No Nets allowed  ) Every species counts for 1 point at the moment but the idea of a golden species list that count for extra points has been considered.

5: How can we prove what we caught?
Every pair will be handed a laminated sheet which must be in a digital photo with your catch. On the sheet will be the designated number for your team so this must be visible in addition to your catch. At the end a few laptops will be set up to take the photos and verify the data.

6:How can i help?

All ideas, comments and assistance is very welcome. The R.N.L.I is a service that we never normally see and most importantly never want to need.It is funded and serviced by lots of volunteers and as Anglers it would be a way of helping a great organization and also giving ourselves an escape clause in case we ever end up in trouble :(

http://www.rnli.org.uk/

So there you go and here is my first attempt at a poster

Love the photo and can anyone guess the beach?

sounds like good fun

can we have a starting point on the antrim coast, im sure theres plenty of anglers up here would to love take part without having to drive for hours and hours just to sign in.

it seems to me this sort of competition, as fun as will be, experience and knowledge of marks will have a lot to do with it. and im sure most people will be more comfortable and have more fun scratching around their local tried and trusted marks that they know well and know whats their to maximize their species count than being on a un familiar stretch of coast and not knowing where to fish. which is why i would really like to do it on my home turf

also i assume there will be no size limit due to all the mini species that will be on everyones lists

ive had another idea but i dont know how practical it would be

if possible the teams of 2 should be made up of 1 angler and 1 non angler (child, friend, wife/girlfriend, someone we know who has expressed and interest but never really bothered about it etc)

that way we can all have fun and show people who dont fish just how fun it is and (hopefully) the variety of fish thats to be caught

brilliant stuff lads, hats off  great idea
im with yngkmd though, i reckon you could/should consider (up to you) one or two representatives in a few other corners of the country as well (belfast and cork etc..) to orchestrate handling matters from there - handing out laminated numbers, collecting the money and collecting the results. otherwise, i cant imagine too many folk taking part in it other than those in the Dublin area.
wouldnt imagine myself travelling to dublin either but would defo consider Belfast

dont think they will need it. as its hopefully country wide at the same times.what you need sparky is hosts for each county .let them decide there venues and post them up the entry cards a few phone calls to each host will give you a winner from each venue and a complete winner over all  then all the fees posted back. and a day out for sai presenting a check[dont let the creep handle the entertainment hes got very expensive i here  ]

Sound like a great idea. Don't know if I can make, might clash with the tail end of a family holiday. Might try to bump into some of you. If i can't, I'll make a donation anyways via http://www.mycharity.ie/charity/rnli/

I'll be workin on this more when I get a min.. But just to remind yas more importantly its for the RNLI and damn what a great job these volunteers do!! I'll be in touch with them later this week, HQ is only around the corner from me. And Temple Street were in touch and looking forward to running the Mad Haddocks again!! Still laughing at seeing Tightlines dressed as a Doughnut!!
We need people to volunteer for this to be points of contact across the country, Sparkey 43 can do out the cards easy enough, but to run it as a national event we would need people on the ground on various districts.

Tightlines ALL!!
@ Twinkle ... Damn right!! :D :D :D But please dont do your Elvis impersonation again!! That was scary the last time!!
