mullet fishing with maggots

#1 Post by alfiebass »

hi all.
just wondering if anyone has used white maggots whilst fishing for mullet.with any success
thought about putting three or four handull as loose feed on the bottom and fishing a bunch on the hook
with just a small weight to take bait to the bottom and touch ledgering for bites.
as i would be fishing in 18 inches of water :?:

I've used the maggots you find on sea weed but they are tiny, very fine, and very fiddly. You'll need a tiny hook to be successful with them. You'd be better off using normal maggots and freeline them at high water just beyond the bank of weed you find at the HW line.

You can use coarse fishing maggots behind a float as Pat suggested. Use a small weighted waggler with no split shot and a 6 foot leader. The maggots will naturally sink slowly. If you want them to sink slower or evel float on the surface, leave them swim in some water for a little while.

Let us know how you get on as I've not really had much success using maggots myself.

Tight lines,

Kev

I usually grease my leader when coarse or fly fishing to keep it afloat. I use gink but sometimes use the natural oil your skin creates . Sounds weird but it works and leaves no slick on the water

Years ago I saw a program with john wilson where he was using maggot on the waggler. The first thing they did when they got to their chosen mark was to throw a load of the rotting weed from the beach in to get the mullet feeding.
The Truth is often stumbled upon by men, most of whom pick themselves up and hurry along as if nothing ever happened.
