Great question, tough one to choose.I generally find its horses for courses as they say, what works well in one area may not be as good in another.Crab are a great bait and give great scent, have had a lot of success on it. But when it comes to availability and affordable you cant beat the lug, in these hard times we are in, you cant beat digging your own bait if its possible for you and being rewarded with some good fish. :)

They won't be turning their noses up at a big juicy lug bait if it's in the water. Tip it off with squid, which is only a couple of quid a box and can be split for a few sessions along with the self dug and the price difference is a lot. When there's plenty of cod about they are dustbins that eat pretty much anything anyway.

I remember fishing in Cork last year with Roger and Gordy and I had most of my fish on lug but the lads had more luck on crab. We were fishing all along the same stretch of beach. Personally I'd always bring both but gun to my head I'd have to go with crab because over all it's always been the better bait for me.

Thats easy, peeler all the way for big cod
The finest gift you can give a fisherman is to put a good fish back, and who knows if the fish that you caught isn't someone else's gift to you?"

Thanks all for the replies its just that the other day i went 2dig some lug and collected some mussels but the lug were down deep and the weather turned bad(i was a bit under the weather myself  )but anyway i hadn"t enough bait for my fishing trip so i had to buy some lug,but theese lug were much smaller and full of sand compared to the ones i usually dig myself so i think the next time i need to buy some bait to top up i think i will get some frozen crab judging by your opinions 8).The fishing was poor that evening anyway but i got one codling on the lug i dug myself.
