sand leads

I was just wondering whether anyone had tried the lead disguising trick of rolling the lead in glue and then in dry sand.
I remember an article in sea angler many many years ago where someone tried two identical set-ups -one with normal lead and one with hidden lead and they claimed a much better success rate with the hidden one.
We wouldnt want to fish with over heavy line so why not try to make the lead as least obvious as possible?
I dont know how long the glue and sand would last but 2 or 3 weights would probably last a session.

Haven't heard of that. Would a lead put off a fish? Wouldn't it just look like a natural gray stone? I guess if the lead is moving, disguising it might be worthwhile.

hi guys,

was reading one of this months magazines and saw an add for something along these lines. there called stonze (i think) there just different sizes and shapes of pebbles with a small hole drilled in them and a swivel glued in for attaching them to the rig. There ment to be the more environmentally friendly way of fishing as if you loose a couple your only leaving a stone on the sea bed not a hunk of lead which soneone has dug up out of the ground. and because there stones they will look right at home on the seabed (well on some parts of the seabed) and the fish dont get spooked.

I've been supergluing small bits of stone to line for years as rotten bottom junk leads - works fine if you only have to lob cast. Concrete is useless if plentiful, has not got sufficient density - you'd end up using a whole block!

Like the environmental approach though...

Do-It molds do a range of finishes for sinkers including the kind of things you are talking about. Think some carp guys use specially coated sinkers with sand and cobbled finishes so they blend in better, might have some durable products/finishes that'd suit your needs

interesting, I feel that this is more relevant for coarse fishing where the fish are caught time and again. If you have the time and patience have a go but I dont think that sea fish are as fussy as their fresh water cousins.

well with many match anglers making rigs out of flurocarbon these days to help target any wary fish i suppose it only makes sense to try to disguise your leads as well when using these rigs? worth a try anyhow!!

some of us do the opposite by painting leads flourescent colours to act as a big attractor in coloured waters as well.
