Re: Mackerel Reports '11 here...
Saw a few taken early last week,Tuesday I think it was, after that blow of wind I'd say that's probably it for skerries this year, although the latest I've had a mak was 17th Nov in the 90's and that was Dun Laoighre pier..Ah if we get a spell of settled weather ya never know ya might pick up the odd straggler. The ice plant in Howth used to fish well for maks late in the season and bruisers too.eoghanb wrote:Any macks still about in skerries?

Results: two mackerel (the other fella got an octopus and two smallish flounder, using mack)
County: Dublin
Region: Dun Laoghaire,
Mark: very end of the West pier
People:myself (two others bait fishing)
Weather: light southerly wind, sunny turning to cloud
Moon: cresent
LW: 1214hrs
Start-time:1130hrs
Stop-time:1600hrs
Bait: pink'n'blue mackerel feathers baited with prawns and ham left over from party
Results: two mackerel (the other fella got an octopus and two smallish flounder, using mack)
Report:
A lovely, mildly hungover afternoon in the sun with lapsidasicle fishing disturbed only by the occasional beep of my mobile phone. A few boats got a bit close to the wall but then what's new? No rubbish or scumbags around. Plenty of friendly Sunday walkers. Good fight off the mackerel. The octopus was great - took a bit of a walk around the pier, changed colour from beige to red, clung on for dear life during rescue attempt, squirted ink upon impact with the water and sculled off in a huff. If it wasn't for my negotiations he would've been in a Chinaman's belly by now.
Thought I maybe missed a few more bites by mackerel but was happy enough to get them at this time of year. Floured and flash-fried the fillets. Wasn't in the humour for inspecting the guts.
I know the octopus is a bit off topic but I couldn't help but post the pics and I know 99% of people here know what a mackerel looks like but there aren't any pics of them on this site and then might be helpful for those unfamiliar with english fish names.

Nice pics of the octopus, a very superior looking one if I may say so. I've never got one from the shore but have got a couple from the boat. Some craic getting them out of the boat; reverse psychology is required. Poke them with a stick in the opposite direction you want them to move! By the way I know a certain Cork/Connemara guy who was sorely tempted to try one of them, weren't you Blackiemc?Gilks wrote:Results: two mackerel (the other fella got an octopus and two smallish flounder, using mack)

I can't argue with you (and it has never done me much good when I tried), it's amazing what you can hide in a harmless looking bowl of chowder...johnwest wrote: Nice pics of the octopus, a very superior looking one if I may say so. Re: Mackerel Reports '11 here...
I love octopus, fresh only not canned though . I remember ordering a huge plate of it in Tenerife with my mates who all ordered beans on toast. We were all alcohol/chemically hungover and one of them threw up everywhere when he seen me eating it.
