I fish mainly for the pot but like to think that I only take those of a decent size and release the smaller ones .
Very subjective , I know , but what would you consider to be a decent/takeable pollack from the rocks ( weight and/or length ) ?
And from a boat ?
Cheers .

Re: what weight is a "decent" pollack ?
usually if i am to keep a fish to eat and since it will only bee feeding 1-2 people i only take fish in the 1 to 2 lb range
and thing smaller is too small and anything bigger is too much
i never keep fish to freeze and i always forget about them and dont eat them
infact i have a rainbow trout thats been in the freezer for 3 years

Hmm , that would be more than half decent up here ( inshore Ballasadare/Sligo Bay ) . There used to be good numbers in that range until about 3 yrs ago when the food progs suddenly discovered them , the price rocketed and the nets came out . 6 lb is good now , 8 lb is great .carpets wrote:7/8 lb would be a half decent size fish in my eyes.................
Or maybe I am just losing the knack !

4-5lb is a good size... anything smaller and there is not much meat to fillet and your best cooking whole, anything bigger and they are super breeders with good genes (to have lived that long and avoid disease and predators) and should be allowed to stay breeding to pass on the genes.

Well lads i am talking about fish of 7lb or 8lb weight would be a decent size pollock but to be fair to them even a 3lb pollock upwards will give you a good scrap on a lure rod,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Re: what weight is a "decent" pollack ?
over 5 pound would be a good one in my book, but my expectations are prob a bit low as its my first year fishing lol i asked dan in halfway the same question and he didnt even get excited when he mentioned '' around 10 lb '' lol suppose depends on what level of angling your at

That is a really cool approach .yngkmd wrote:usually if i am to keep a fish to eat and since it will only bee feeding 1-2 people i only take fish in the 1 to 2 lb range . Any thing smaller is too small and anything bigger is too much.
I do fillet and freeze so would keep largish ones but rarely catch above 6 Lb anyway . Best was 9 1/4 , from boat . Anything less than about 2 lb is normally returned .
Thanks for all the comments . It's interesting hear other peoples' views .
