Dollymount(Sutton end)
Was wondering whether anybody has fished the end of Dollymount Strand the Sutton end, facing Howth in the past few weeks.
I haven't fished there before but have a feeling that it can produce.
I'm wondering whether it is best fished by day or night and what tides were most productive and what species I might expect to
either target or come across. Also, what is the ground like?
I'm thinking of heading out over the weekend, weather depending.
Cheers, looking forward to the replys to my first post!

Re: Dollymount(Sutton end)
I walked all they way down there this summer on in coming tide, and on shore breeze, the amount of weed was just silly, I was told theres possibilites of flounder etc. but on that day blanked ...except for a tonne of weed!! (how ppl power kite there with that much weed is unreal, im sure it gets tied up in thier equipment aswell!!) anyways i did some really hard power cast to try and get away from the weed without much joy, the few cast that did touch sand I found it very soft sand, cant see why it wouldnt fish well as there is a local rag,lug mark near by and the amount of crabs around there is unreal, the bottom end is populated with Common Seals aka Harbour seals (about 25 if them, the rarer of the two species we have) never gave me any hassle as they are shyer, oh and during spring the bottom end is closed off for nesting terns. But an easier approach might be made from the sutton end without going on to the Bull, casting out from the dignhy club area though that ground can be a bit snaggy cpompared with the Bull, Have a look during low water keep an eye out for possible snags etc look for the deep gullies that are within your cast range
Ps Congrats on your first post!! look forward to a stunning report!!
BECAREFUL on the very end of the Bull, the sand down there is VERY soft which can go easily up to your knees best to stay up on the foreshore and cast out, often you'll see lads fishing the other end down by the wooden bridge again the normal fish have been reported there flounder etcs, but i've blanked down there as well
(i'd bet i overcasted the fish!!)

Re: Dollymount(Sutton end)
Fished it once last year with no results but like any mark Im sure if you put the hours in youll get a result. Have seen a few reports from Dollymount over the last 2 years so do a search in the reports section and see what ya think.
Just wanna second what Creep said about the sand. Very soft and if youre on your own and get caught youre screwed. Not many walkers go down that far. Best of luck and failte romhat to the site.

Re: Dollymount(Sutton end)
Lads, thanks very much for the advice. I think I'll do a bit of scouting around this weekend though. By all accounts the end of the Bull seems to be a load of Bull. But since it's so near the house its easy to put the hours in. It's defo somewhere that I'll persevere with and keep people posted on any results.

Re: Dollymount(Sutton end)
I wouldnt discount it as a bad mark just yet, just to know when it fishes well, in fact in the Irish Angler (this month)there was a report of a Specimen flounder been taken from Dollymount, didnt say exactly where (not that it matters as they tend to move around looking for viable food source). Theres lots of beaches on the Northside of the Liffey that dont "fish well" but that being said I blanked on a Southside beach recently so its a matter of time, time of year, etc etc. all the fun of the game.. I have a funny feeling North of the Liffey beaches might fish better in winter, but the only way to test this theory is to get out and get the lines wet
Another beach that confuses me as well is the Barrow, here we have a beach FULL of the right prey for a variety of fish, I've used different rigs, lures, traces and bait, but not a tap, fished it at all different states of tides (another dangerous beach to watch out for though as there is a low gullie between a high sand bank and if you go out at low tide you will get trapped on the sand bank with a flooding tide;) seen to many people getting stuck there
but again I will be trying it during the winter to see if anything is about

Re: Dollymount(Sutton end)
I definitely wont discount it. There is fishing to be had there!!Was out earlier cycling around, checking out the channels, ground etc. Is that the beach at Sutton? (Burrow or Barrow?)Definitely another stretch that I will be extensively exploring as it's close enough to get there by Bike...Have taken your advice about the sands of the Bull and think I'll fish from the back of the dinghy club on the Sutton side. Was back and forth at low tide making a few notes. Seems like a few places are snag free (took a few photos just for future reference) Did a bit of spinning behind the Martello tower and found all the weed that you were talking about
Itching to get down around there again though. Also, looking forward to trying that strand around and behind the golf course. I read that it's a nice alround spot and hopefully there's Bass there.

Re: Dollymount(Sutton end)
Yep Sorry typo Burrow, theres lots of places there and they are far easier to get to via a bike then a car, However last time i was mack fishin on the howth cliffs came up to find a couple of scum messin with the bike lucky enough had both wheels locked and tied it up around the rocks, but still they managed to damage the damn thing
really dont want to start lugging down a bike down the cliffs (thought about it last time, rope easing it down , but just not worth the hassle, far easier to put big ol crabs in the bags
)

Sorry to hear about the Bike, Creep..Think the crabs might be a good idea or something along these lines in a handy Bike friendly version...

I wouldnt be dragging it up and down hills if I was you. Youre better off locking it in the village, there's places outside the Dart station and one or two further up I think. I think there are more up the hill towards the church, then you can just turn to the left if youre heading to the cliffs.

That sand bar that you mentioned the fish are well past that where the flood happens from baldoyle there is a very deep water tidal channel out there hence the fish dont need to come in close.... Got that info from a man of the fisherys board the only time I was on that beach..... Hope that helps you understand that beach

Re: Dollymount(Sutton end)
I love that anti theft device
that could be very useful, not only keeping unwanteds from the car BUT you could also BBQ your fish there and then!!! Wonder if theres any suppliers here in this Country
@Sparkey I heard that alright, but the amount of prey close in, you'd think that would drive the fish in, last time I went swimming (and yes the whale and dolphin group, did try and put me back in!!!
) I was snorkeling and it was unbelievable, the amount of sandeels. small crabs, white bait fish, small shrimp... even the shore birds looked full!
as they didnt even seem bothered. Often ya hear that expression think like a fish, and i kept thinkin If I was a fish I'd be there, but obviously Im not thinkin like them then...
