South Wicklow beach, 23-7-11

#1 Post by Sweetwrasse »

People: Denis and Myself

Duration:20.00-03.15

Tide:Allegedly rising but didn't look like it!

Weather:Calm and mild

Bait:Peeler, rag, mack, squid

Rigs:Pulleys, flappers, clip-downs

Results:Denis- 2 doggies, Me- 2 gurnard, 1 flounder, 2 doggies and 2 pups.

Report:With fishing taking a back seat for a few weeks I was itching to get out and try to get in on some of the smoothy action I've been hearing about. Called Denis and a plan was hatched.
Arrived at the mark to fish the 'rising' tide, I reckon with this place you just turn up and take your chances, but was a beautiful evening with barely any wind.
First baits in the water at 20.00 and blank was saved by 20.15 with what I think is a tub gurnard? A new species for me and my first gurnard from the shore, happy days :D
This was quickly followed by another gurnard, both taken on mack belly strip at about 40 metres. The distance rod had remained untouched so reeled it in and changed to crab baits from the mack I had out hoping for a ray, sadly I just don't think I've got the casting welly for ray fishing from this beach
As dusk fell I had a flounder to 21 cm on rag. Things went quiet for a while then until Denis landed a doggie. Had a dog then myself but still no sign of the hounds. Things were quiet enough so had a chance to relax and noticed the moon was a strange red colour which was a beautiful sight.
Bites picked up again and I had 2 pups, one at distance and one close in, both were taken on rag tipped with squid. The bites were coming fairly regularly now with no hook-ups, so I can only assume that the pups were having bother getting their jaws around the bigger crab baits on 3/0 pennells which I was hoping might tempt their mum to pay a visit. That was how it continued for the rest of the night really with just another doggie apiece, bites were frequent when we were leaving but no really big rattles, the previous nights pints were catching up with us now so it was time to hit the road.
