Mullet on Fly, West Clare, July 15th 2011

#1 Post by Ross »

People: Ross

Duration: 2 hrs

Tide: 1 hr before HW and 1 hr after.

Weather: Breezy SW, but sheltered

Bait: Various Flys

Rigs:
Greys Salt Fly Rod 7 Wt., floating line
Results:
2 Missed takes and 1 successful!

Report:
From the start everything went wrong! I'm new to Mullet Fly Fishing with only one success prior to this attempt.
I put the fly everywhere but in a fish for 1 hr solid! I hooked grass in a high bank behind me, a low wire fence, and often landed in clumps of floating weed. The rising tide was washing all sorts of "goodies" out of rotting seaweed and the mullet were queueing up with mouths open on the surface! At one stage I discovered that the reason my casting sounded like a Lion Tamers whip was because my fly was missing! How long I had been flogging the water with no fly I'm not sure! The sight of all those hungry mullet kept me going so I persevered! 8) I went through every fly in my fly box until one gave me two missed takes!
Finally a solid take and a Mullet was on! :D What a a scrap on a light rod! Finally I landed a Mullet of 3 lbs, 13 ozs, not a big one but a great scrapper! :D It made up for all the mucking!

Got a selection from Dave Mc Bride, Southside Angling in Dublin. The one that worked has black hackles with some yellow through it.
I will try to put up photo.

By the sound of it a maggot imitation would have been the way to go. i recommend having one in the box at all times, very useful flys!

Well done on the fish, its in fine condition by the looks of it :D

Congratulations on your fly caught mullet, that's a great result! I have only very recently taken up fly fishing myself and I am trying to get my first mullet on the fly, it not that easy but I won't give up and after reading your report it's made me even more determined. The fight sounds amazing, want to experience that for myself, hopefully sooner rather than later. Well done to you.
