Sea Trout

Im heading down fishing in wexford to a mark were river meets the sea and i've heard there are of sea trout in it.

would my spinning rod and reel be suitable for trying to catch the sea trout ? or would i have to look at getting my hands on some fresh water gear

Its a 9ft abu garcia 20-60g, standard spinning reel with 12bl line

well that set up would be fine to do the job but then it may not be satisfactory in terms of sport if you are getting pounders

personally i wouldnt go investing in a different set up unless you were gonig to get into this type of fishing regularly

hi chenz - if i'm spinning for sea trout i'll use a 10g -40g rod with 8lb line, your set up is not far off so it'll do just fine. small toby lures do well for me on my outfit ie the 12,18,22g ones.

as above no point investing in new gear - but you could pick a cheap rod (£20) if your target fish are not over the pound mark.

chenz if you are targeting seatrout well then you will neeed your licence put if you catch one acidentlly then you dont,,,just realease it and you will be fine,,,,seatrout are common where i am and ive had lads down the beach and all they wanted to do was spin so i said let them away,,,so the 3 of them headed for the estuary and i stayed at the beach 500 yards up fishing into a gully,,,,an hour they returned with nothing and i had a 1 1/2 lber,,,,,,so just shows ya the trout do move the beach too,,,ive had one 2-3 miles from one of the best known eastuaries in ireland and yet when i go to the estuary i got none,,hit or miss,,,,,spinning is probably the best way to catch more alright...the rod you have is fine,,just bring a few different spinners,,,dont rule out the flying condoms,,,,,spin away and have your other rods out baited with a 2 hook flapper,,,make a 2 hook flapper(long trace 5ft} with one hook high up and the other well down,,,keep the snoods 8-12 inches,,,this way you have a good chance of the top hook just slighty being off the bottom when in hold grip position,,,now have your sandeel on the top and mackerel on the bottom,,,seatrout get attracted by moving sandeels in the surf,,,also the mackerel should add to scent,,,best of luck,,,hope you get a good one

Things didn't go to plan today. Only managed to get out fishing for a hour and didn't catch any trout just an eel

The others all caught some trout but they were there all day.
