I have often heard that you should never wash your hands with soap before fishing. I do believe this as with some soaps you can smell for hours after you use them and as fish have an unbelievable sense of smell they may pick up the scent easily. As for cigerates I dont know, I have seen heavy smokers catching fish in large numbers on many occasions so I wouldnt read too much into it to be honest.

I actually believe smoking enhances the flavour of your fish ! I love the taste of smoked mackerel!

,,,, like when I used to smoke years ago I once remember holding the rod , getting a bite swapping the rod to the hand with the cigarette to adjust the tensioner only to watch my line shoot through the rings after burning through the line
